WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT (1857-1930). 27th President of the United States (1909-13). 10th Chief Justice of the United States (1921-30). U.S. Solicitor General (1890-92). Governor of the Philippines (1901-03). Secretary of War (1904-08). The only former President to serve on the Supreme Court. TLS, 1p.4to, New Haven, Conn., June 22, 1915. To E.B. Walden at the Corn Products Refining Company in New York City, thanking him "...for the kind invitation which you extend to me to deliver the Fourth of July address at Hackensack, New Jersey. In reply I regret very much to say that I shall be unable to accept. I have made my plans to leave with my family on Thursday for Murray Bay, Canada, on a much needed vacation, and I would not want to return such a distance...". With stamped envelope addressed to Walden.
