A groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 7, 2004 in the Park. The $1.3 million project will include the construction of an artificial-turf soccer field.
"We're very proud of this project," Mayor John "Jack" Zisa said in a news release. "This project will expand the recreational facilities of Hackensack, providing a place for residents to play soccer, enjoy the river, or just relax at the park."
Construction is expected to be completed by July.

"Forty-eight Bergen County towns will split more than $3.3 million in grants to spruce up parks or create new ones.
Hackensack will get the largest chunk of money from the trust fund, a $290,000 grant that will help fund the city's $1.3 million restoration of Johnson Park on River Street.
Soccer players have for years complained of twisting their ankles on the park's dirt field. Hackensack officials are planning to build a new synthetic turf field and a retaining wall to prevent flooding from the nearby Hackensack River."
