Not a bad selection.
Either you are too young OR afraid to admit you ever cavorted at the Ivy House; listened to the piano player and hoisted cocktails with the lawyers and judges at the Colonial with brother Lou; went to the transvestites ball on the last night that the State Restaurant was open; or caught the male go go dancers at The New Bell.
Hackensack has had it's fair share of fine watering holes.

Charlamane
Dweets Place

Are you referring to the Charlmaree and Dweet's Royal Oak? Didn't Dweet's have a couple of name variations?

Any of you hipsters have the "Dweetmania - Live at Dweet's" album? You can see part of the cover - what fit on a scanner - here:

I'll have to take some pictures of mine and post them.

Homer....Yes your first assumption is right..... I'm too young ,,,,,54 years of age to be exact....But even at 54, my mind is lacking some of what it use to have,(maybe it's the side effects of drinking, which I don't do anymore)16 years havn't had more then a beer now and then with supper..

There are some establisments I can not remember...Like in the middle of main street, round about where the short-cut is to get to the Bus Transfer and it was next to the shoemakers shop, there was a nice little bar owened by a guy named Richie, had live bands some nights....I can't remember the name of that place for anything..I know Richie was from Hack, and sold the bar to go to Fla. and open a Hot Dog Stand...which I heard he did......any help...?

Theres a few more I can't remember...

Never knew the ones you mention of in Hackensack...it was before my time, Not afraid to admit it, I would have been right there with you.....

Charlamane
Dweets Place

BLeaf....Yes I did mean Dweets Royal Oak Room
which is now Lazy Lannigans....Dweet had that and Dweets East over on Ceader Lane under the Path-Mark in Teaneck....

And yes, to your Question did I mean Charlmaree... Sometimes I can't remember and sometimes I can't spell...sometimes I just don't proof read my typing...which by the way I do with 2 fat fingers.......shoot me.

But its all good....

Sorry Chief O; but, I can't help you out with a joint on Main Street near the walkway to the bus transfer station. The walkway was actually a street known as Demarest Place until the mid 70's when it was converted to a pedestrian walkway. There was an Army- Navy store named Sherbys on the southeast corner --  right across Main Street from the old Grants dept. store.

Charlamagne is next to the burned out Anderson Street train station.  That's still in business, and so is The Riviera and General Poor's Tavern.

Never been big on bars and clubs.  You guys missed a few bars no longer in business:

Fairmount Tavern --- torn down 1980's to build condos.  I think corner of Main & Jefferson.  This was in business for generations, and it was where all the old timer senior hung out.  Also ex-Mayor Fred Cerbo used to walk there, so didn't have to worry about having to drive home.
The Maverick --- It was only open for a few years, was rehab'd from a former commercial use and had vertical wood siding.  Also torn down 1980's to build condos. Pool tables and bar.  Main, east side, just north of Catalpa Ave
The Player's Club --- This Property now the Rite Aid and the condos behind it.  Corner of Essex and Polifly, with a huge grassy lawn along Essex Street where kids played baseball. Really hot club where singles went to meet someone and "hook up", big place, big dance floor.  Brought in the crowds from all over Bergen County. And lots of mix-race action going on there.  That song about "We just want to dance here, someone stole the dance floor" was big around the time it was closed down.
The Limelight --- also known derisively as "The Slimelight", on Essex Street, south side, just west of Rowland Ave. Also had a dance floor, I believe, but never went there.  Now Lakeview Learning, a children's clothes store

I can name a few more that are still in business, The Restaurant, Harley's Pub, Friday's, The Sports Authority, etc., but that's not the point of this string, is it.  And what's the one that moved from Prospect and Essex to Main Street just south of Target.

SHEEHAN'S PUB !!!

Oh, what's wrong with me.  I forgot Sheehan's Pub, corner of Johnson Ave and Orchard Place.  The owner, Jim Sheehan, moved to Hackensack from Wyckoff and he lived in the apartment upstairs.   Hegot his political career started by owning a bar, and bar-tending it.

Sheehan was a fire-breathing Republican, Hackensack's very own contribution to the Republican Revolution of 1994.  Remember Newt Gingrich.  Sheehan served as a Bergen County Freeholder during the heyday of Newt Gingrich.  He was a partisan bulldog on every Republican issue you can imagine, and he loved to attack Democrats, liberals, socialists, new taxes, etc.  When the Democrats took over County government, they opened a homeless shelter right down the street, 1/2 block away. Coincidence or not ?

He isn't around anymore, but his daughter (Jamie ?)  is still involved with the Bergen County Republican party.  Not sure what capacity.

Homer where was this located ?....it wasn't in the State Hotel was it ?.....That's another building that always intrigued while walking past, if that building could speak i'd be there to listen....

There was a car flipped on it's roof last night almost in front of the State Hotel yesterday 01-02-2010

Sorry there Chief; but, the State Restaurant was located in a group of  buildings on the corner of Main Street and what was then Morris Street. This building has been replaced by the large flight of stairs leading up to the plaza level of Court Plaza at the corner of  Main Street and what is now Sussex Street.

Used to go to O'Neil's around 1977, just after graduating high school. Drinking age then was 18. How stupid was that? 50 cent beers, get slobberknocked watching Saturday Night Live. Run next door to Luigi's and grab a slice to bring back to the bar. Surely the worst pizza in all of Bergen County, but it was convenient.

If I recall, O'Neil's became Lazy Lanigan's, and they relocated to Main Street near Ross Ave after the Essex Street block was leveled for the big redevelopment project.  Lazy Lanigan's is doing much better business in the new location and happy about the forced relocation, I'm told.

Seems I remember a bar in the 1970's on Main street (West Side) just South of the Anderson St. intersection. It had a narrow front and I think was called: "Eddie's" (no relation)
