Kartch's Advertising Bell
« on: March 24, 2010, 01:00:15 AM »

Seller's description:

This is a brass advertising bell.  One side says KARTCH'S BOYS SHOPS MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.  The other side says 270 MAIN ST. PATERSON, NJ  59 LEXINGTON AVE. PASSAIC, NJ  215 MAIN ST. HACKENSACK, NJ.  It measureas about 3 1/4" high, 1 3/4" wide & 1 1/4" deep.  Excellent condition, the clapper still works, just needs a good cleaning.

So you thought you were cool buying your clothes at David Burr, huh? Piffle! Kartch's was the place to go in the mid-late 60s (after it no longer was a "boy's shop").

One of the bell's bottom edges looks kind of ragged. And it really does need a major cleaning. I used to have one of these and it should have a nice bronze color, mainly because that's what it is - bronze, not brass.

Thom McAn had some cool shoes in the late 60s, but Robert Hall was where my mother wanted to take me shopping in the early 60s.

No way!

I remember going to Robert Hall, but don't recall where on State St. it was. I remember Thom McAn. It was in the little row of stores that included Esposito's Market, next to the Middle school. I think there was a gas station on the other end of the block, either a Sinclair or a Flying A? I recall one time a student went into Espositos and shop lifted, I recall one of the owners/workers chasing him, falling and breaking his leg. I also recall democratic campaign headquarters being there. We used to go in and get a million bumper stickers and plaster them all around town. I'm a Republican now, but back them I was affiliated with the "Punk Party".

 ???

I'm pretty sure Thom McAn was on the east side of Main St in the block south of Passaic St.

I believe that you are correct there that Thom's was on the east side of Main Street south of Passaic Street. There were a few others down there before the mid to late 60s. It was no coincidence that when the malls opened in the 60's and 70's, it was the chain shoe stores that were the first to pull out of not only Main St. Hackensack but from other local shopping areas throughout the Country where malls were similarly situated.

And speaking of Robert Hall where you could by a suit with an extra pair of pants, do you remember their " We're doing our Christmas shopping at Robert Hall this year for low low prices and....................................etc." or " It's back to school again at Robert Hall this year ................................etc.

hmmm, weird, I kind of remember a Thom McAn on Main St. now that you mention it. But I seem to remember this little skinny Thom McAn store on State St. My mom would never let me where Cons or Pumas like the other kids, because I had flat feet and needed a "sturdy arch".  ::) Where was Robert Hall, down by Mercer and Atlantic St? It's been 40 years with the last 23 living in CA, so a little rusty on my Hackensack trivia and getting fuzzy memory. ;D

Clay St....... it sort of Dead Ends at State St.......But if you continue across State it goes into a parking lot behind what used to be stores on Main St i.e. (Jacoby Appliance)......Thats where Robert Hall was...... There was a Western Union Telegraph to the left.....and Robert Hall was to the right......and if you go a little further right there is a big old Bell telephone building........

The Robert Hall commercial brought tears to my eyes.  Go to Robert Hall and get a blue suit and they throw in a gray pair of pants. Walk over to Thom's and get a pair of brown penny loafers and stick in two shiny pennies. Bring them to the shoemaker and put metal taps on the back of the heels. Next you put on a white shirt with a tab in front of the top button to push out your two inch wide tie. Put on a splash of the old man's Old Spice and grease up your Fabian spitcurl on the front and your DA in the back.
What 12 year old chick is going to say no when you ask her to dance to Pat Boone singing Love Letters in the Sand?
Ah, the good old days.

Are you talking about the round metal things that went on the bottom of sofa legs that we used to put in the bottom of the heels of our shoes to make a cool sound when we walked?

When you rode a bicycle at night and dragged your feet, you'd get two big trails of sparks (then you'd forget about that and touch them and burn your hand).

Gotta disagree on the penny loafers, however - WAY too rah-rah. Black leather square-toe loafers with white leather lightning side insets were even cooler than white buck loafers, which were much cooler than Pat Boone's lace-up bucks.

The round metal things at the bottom of the sofa legs only had a short life span. You had to go to the shoemaker who sat in the front window of his fifteen foot wide storefront and had the roper hanging out of the corner of his mouth. After you recovered from the stench of that thing he would hammer in these crescent shaped metal taps on to the soles of your shoes that would help project your James Dean image when you hung out in front of the local candy store. The justification to your mother was that they prolonged the life of the heels and she would save money by not having to get new heels put on the shoes that you ruined anyway by wearing the shoes when you went roller skating down the hill.
The black leather square toes that you refer to were appropriate to wear with white sweat socks and black chinos with pegged pant legs and a belt on the back or two on the sides.

Yeah - what we used to call cleats, which were put on to forestall uneven heel wear. You meant "heels" rather than "soles", right? Otherwise, you'd sound like a tap dancer.

The black leather square toes that you refer to were appropriate to wear with white sweat socks and black chinos with pegged pant legs and a belt on the back or two on the sides.
When I was in 7th grade at Holy Trinity, there was an 8th-grader who wore those leather lightning square-toe loafers (and an exaggerated version of the hair style you mentioned above). And you KNOW pegged pants were NOT permitted at HTS!

I had forgotten all about those little useless belts in the back.

Semantically you are indeed correct when referring to cleats being used to protect your shoe heels rather than the soles. But perhaps we should look at it from another perspective. Maybe the Nuns were acting like cleats protecting souls from heels like Elvis Presley whose gyrating hips on the Ed Sullivan Show were a cause for moral outrage during the Robert Hall / Thom McAn / cleats / DA era or is that error?

I'm pretty sure that Sister Mary Elephant would object to being compared to something found on the bottom of our shoes and Elvis' gyrating hips on the Ed Sullivan Show did not cause any moral outrage because no one saw them.

Sullivan had ordered that the cameras only show him from the waist up.
