Hackensack Wheelmen's Club (1896)
« on: August 09, 2006, 10:43:05 AM »

Thanks to Frank Campbell for the image.  That's Frank's dad, front and center in the striped shirt.

Here's an excerpt from Oritani Field Club printed in The County Seat.

In the 1890’s, bicycling was in its heyday. The club’s vision was to raise $5,000 and build a cycling track around the baseball field. A member vote however decided to allocate the saved money on a dance hall. One hundred club members resigned based on that decision only to form their own association, the Hackensack Wheelmen’s Club on March 8, 1895. This was a disappointment for many of the remaining members but dances and similar functions soon attracted new members who previously had little desire to be part of the Club.

This says "Hackensack Wheelman".  I guess this was their clubhouse.

On ebay here. 1905.

Thanks to Bob Leafe.

A gentleman contacted me saying that he recently purchased this at an auction.  He's now selling it.  If you are interested, please let me know.  I will also ask him to follow up with a reply to post his contact information.
