"North Hackensack" Kinderkamack & Main PC w/1920 PM
« on: May 04, 2010, 01:00:46 AM »
Currently River Edge, of course.

Cardpath: Catalpa Ave, Hackensack, to Belgium.

I'm inquiring about the street in the distance, with a white picket fence running up a low incline.  Could that be Kinderkamack Road north of Main Street ?

Uh, yeah - that's why I wrote "Kinderkamack & Main" in the post's title.   :D

I think the street corner in the foreground is actually Kinderkamack and Grand Ave, that why I inquired.

I think Main Ave is one block in the distance, intersecting Kinderkamack.

I wasn't sure that the photo was facing north, but I interpret from your response that it should be obvious.

Of the three roads mentioned (Kinderkamack, Main, Grand), the only one with an incline is Kinderkamack and that incline is visible only when you are facing north.

Bob.....Why does that have to be Kinderkamack....I dont see anything on the card saying that....maybe it's not that far North....

Maybe, possibly... the incline is running east to west...maybe it's someplace a little further south.....i.e. Main and SpringValley,(with the incline being SpringValley) facing sort of west...

or Main and Davis...(incline being Davis) I'm just saying....is there something that tells you it's nowadays Riveredge ...

Well, that's certainly a legitimate question.

Whenever I see a card from that period that says "North Hackensack", it usually shows a scene in the area just north of Rt 4 (or where Rt 4 would be, had it existed back then). Conversely, I've show cards from the same area that were labeled "Hackensack" and someone mentions that it's River Edge.

While the road in the center and its incline scream "Kinderkamack north of Main" to me, I'm not as confident about the rest of the scene. If only there was a "Total Wine" store (or a Foodtown) in that area to the left of that road.............

As I once posted elsewhere (assuming it WAS Kinderkamack), it looks to me like the photo was taken from the southern boundary of the New Bridge Landing Post Office, looking north.

I'm gonna try to get there tomorrow and take a picture from the same spot. If you or anyone else feel it's really elsewhere, post a shot of your location so that it topographically looks like this card.

Let's see what we can come up with.

OK - here's my entry and the original for comparative purposes.

Of course, the roads are a lot wider now. Other than the coincidence of the two nearest poles being in almost the same places, the thing I notice are the trees in the left background: they elevate as you get closer to the left edge. That could be another coincidence, but the upper parts of trees are subject to a lot less change over time than whatever's at ground level.

I'm anxious to see the other possible location images.

That's real close.

I think the older shot is taken a bit to the south, because there's a dirt road in the foreground, running left to right.  I think that's Grand Avenue.

It's too short a distance from Main. If I shot from Grand, I'd be doubling my distance from Main. The K&M intersection and the Kinderkamack incline would appear smaller and much more distant.

I brought a printout of the old image with me to put myself in the right spot. If you look to the right in my picture, there's a driveway that pretty much coincides with what you say is Grand Ave. It doesn't appear that there was much need for a driveway back then, so it may have been a path, perhaps leading to someone's front door.

A footpath, OK. I'll take your word on that.  Looks like the cement of the sidewalk continues slightly at the right edge of the photograph, where it wouldn't if that were Grand Ave.

Those are great before/after images.  Incredible how rural and pastoral that area was, compared to how developed and urban it is now.

That's called "progress" and "ratables".  There are rural towns all over America that are basically one street with houses scattered along 2 miles, and maybe just a handful of intersecting streets.  That's River Edge (aka Riverside, aka Cherry Hill) way back then.  Basically it was just the scattered homes on Kinderkamack Road, and a handful of houses around Main & Grand.

That's funny....and That sure would CINCH it......
or wheres Arthur Treacher's fish and Chips.....ha....ha

Great  After shot....though....it is a good possibility....But we can't be Positive......

Don't wait for me to post any After locations...I wish I could, But I lack the tools, to do so.....

I wasn't doubting you Bob....I just thought you had that location in writting from the original owner or the seller usualy you post a link ....

Shoot... Catalpa is an incline.......maybe it was right down the street from old Karl F. (Pappas) ?

The Streets in Before picture, except the incline....are not defined enough so we can't tell if the are even streets..

Your still the Greatest Bob.....Thanks for Sharing... ;)

<< wheres Arthur Treacher's fish and Chips >>

It's in justwatching's photo taken from Grand Avenue.

<< it is a good possibility....But we can't be Positive...... >>

What's this "we" stuff?

<< I just thought you had that location in writting from the original owner or the seller >>

The seller's usually in Idaho or somewhere like that. I tend to trust my own knowledge in that situation.

<< The Streets in Before picture, except the incline....are not defined enough so we can't tell if the are even streets.. >>

There's that odd pronoun again. Stay away from that we-we.   ;D

Forum; 1/ a public assembly, lecture, or program involving audience or panel discussion..
2/a medium (as a publication) of OPEN DISCUSSION

Sorry. What I meant was that your question shook my belief in my original assumption. Because it's an open discussion, I invited you and anyone else to educate me about some other area that I wasn't thinking of that might be a better choice.

But after seeing and comparing the two pictures, I felt pretty convinced that it was what I thought it was. When you then said "We", it implied that an equal level of doubt still existed on both our parts.

You know the old Lone Ranger/Tonto joke that ends with Tonto's "what you mean 'we,' kemosabe?" line? That's what I was flashing on when I wrote "What's this 'we' stuff?"

Am I 100% sure of my choice? Of course not. That's why I would still want to see any image from anyone who knows of a better match.

The important thing to me is to try to get it right - not to be right. These are historical records that will exist long after we're gone and posterity requires that we do our best to get it right if we can.
