Description:

What we are offering here are a set of tax bills representing two propeerties in the City of Hackensack, New Jersey. The bills - all paid and receipt-stamped by the city - date from 1940 to 1949, and they are all in the name of either Hiram W. Phillips or Hiram W. and Eunice R. Phillips, who lived first at 274 State Street, Hackensack, and then at 176 Summit Avenue, Hackensack. Because of size and color variations from year to year, here's a chronological breakdown of the bills in the lot:

1940 - all light blue, and in Hiram's name only, and for 274 State Street only. One bill for the first and second quarters, and two for the third and fourth quarters, the second showing a change in valuation and a consequent overpayment. These all measure 6" x 12" except the first and second quarter bill is shorter because a stub has been detached.

1941 - all light grey, and in Hiram's name only, and for 274 State Street only. One bill for the first and second quarters, and two for the third and fourth quarters, the second showing a change in valuation and a consequent overpayment. These also all measure 6" x 12" except the first and second quarter bill is shorter because a stub has been detached.

The bills for 1942 through 1949 all measure about 8" x 4-1/2". The bills for each year are paper-clipped together (so there may be rust and indentation marks). All are billed jointly to Hiram and Eunice Phillips.

1942 - Cream color. Two bills (first half/second half) for 274 State Street (which is also the Phillips' mailing address) and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1943 - Blue. Two bills (first half/second half) for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave. The Phillips' mailing address is 274 State Street for the first half bills, but the second half bills - and the bills for all the subsequent years in the batch - are addresssed only to Hiram Phillips at 176 Summit Ave.

1944 - Yellow. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1945 - Light grey. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1946 - White. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1947 - White with green type. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1948 - White with brown type. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave.

1946 - White. Two bills for 274 State Street and two bills for 176 Summit Ave., plus a corrected second half bill for 176 Summit Ave., showing a lowered valuation and assessment.
