Random Hackensack images on eBay
« on: March 10, 2015, 07:50:25 PM »
While listening to a two-hour internet radio show, I decided to check out some old territory by entering "hackensack" in eBay's search engine to see if there were any interesting images that I hadn't seen before.

I found five.

1. You can get this with any town name on it.

2,3. Self-explanatory

4. No clue, but a truly bizarre picture

5. This was described as a "mural across from B&W Bakery in 1968". Does anyone remember this? I don't.

5a. Closeup of the written info on the mural

All of these images are bigger than I usually post, so click to enlarge.

Picture #4 might have been from Jack Schlein Buick which was located on Main Street north of Temple Ave. I don't remember this particular photo; but, he used to go under the name " Hackensack Jack" and he used to come up with some outrageous ads and characteratures of himself in his ads. The face looks vaguely familiar.
Just a guess.

I could be wrong, but that doesn't look like the name of a person who would feature KKK-looking outfits.

Yes, I do remember that hideous mural across from BW Bakery.  And I remember despising it, and wishing that the city council would order it to be painted over.

And picture #4 makes me bristle.  It shows how establishment the KKK used to be, so much so that businesses duplicated that look in their ads

Ol' Homer fired up his brain cells thinking about the mural across from B and W. Although the listing said it was from 1968, I think it was  1978 instead. To make along story short, I was in the Civic Center one day and was looking at the mural on the back wall. Someone came over and we started taling about it. I asked if the person who did that mural was the same person who did the "B and W mural". He told me that the same artist was doing a mural at the Union Street Park. Later on I went over to the park and the artist was there with some kids painting the wall on a building next to the park. I started talking to him and he told me that he had projected a page from the New York Times  showing runners on the starting line for the first New York City marathon. He told me that he likes to get neighborhood kids involved with his murals not only to get them interested in painting; but, because when they sign the art work they get a feeling of self esteem and other kids who might have vandalized it won't touch it because of name recognition. If you look at the photo of the mural across from B and W you can see the names of the paint crew. I think that the business who allowed the Main Street mural to grace their wall was Brothers Carpeting. He and his crew also did a mural on a wall on the walkway between Main Street and what is now a parking garage. I recall going to a men's store one day and the owner told me that he and some other store owners didn't like this mural because in their minds it created an image of New York City building and subway graffiti .
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder -- I guess.

yes, the mural was there in the late 1970's, not 1968.  And it was there throughout the 80's.

As for Jack Schlein, good chance that name is Jewish, but could have been German.  But back when that photo was taken, the majority of people in Bergen County were of white Protestant background, and it was considered unacceptable to be Catholic or Jewish (and to be Black was even worse). There were riots and demonstrations and marches against Catholics in the 1920's and 1930's. This part of our history is not well recorded. There was sheer hysteria in Maywood when Queen of Peace began construction. There was a full-scale riot in Teaneck when a Catholic family rented an apartment above a fire station. History records the discrimination against Blacks, but not against Catholics and Jews.

And of the population of Bergen County which was NOT of white Protestant background, many were working class people who couldn't afford to buy a car. To be a car dealer at that time meant dealing with the racist buyers.  So from a business perspective, as sad it is sounds, a Jewish businessperson might want to appeal to the racist Klan mentality by dressing up in that fashion, just to attract buyers. Truly pathetic if he was German, and even worse if he was Jewish

I met "Hackensack Jack" a few times in the 80's while working at Guy-Ross Chevrolet...from what I remember I think he owned either our building, or the property, along with one of the Stillman's (from Stillman-Hoag Buick in Englewood). His dealership was pretty small, right across the street from Lido's, on that corner where the bank and (I think) the Quick Chek is now.

I just took a quick cruise through the first 500 Hackensack auctions on eBay (out of over 1,300) to see if there were any images I'm not familiar with or that just caught my eye.

I came up with these 10:

Optimist Club
Hackensack High School horse head charm
The China Garden Restaurant Orchestra
The Calvary Baptist Church with not another structure in sight
Boating Party, presumably in Hackensack
White Manna I
White Manna II
Main Camera
Hackensack Hospital Street Fair
Buckle Bros auto dealership, 48 State St (seller says they sold Pierce Arrows)
