One year ago a hydroponics store popped up in Hackensack near the corner of State Street and Essex Street and since then the gardening community has welcomed Mike Vasile, the owner of Bergen County Hydroponics, with open arms.

For Mike, gardening began as a hobby 17 years ago. After several years working in the corporate world, he turned his passion into his profession by starting up his own hydroponics store.

Mike opened Bergen County Hydroponics last year in the front of the building that holds AU Florists, a flower shop that Mike's grandfather started in the 1960s. Business has been growing as word of the store spreads with community members who will stop by for gardening supplies and advice.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. And it comes with several benefits for a gardener including lower water costs (since the water stays in the system and can be reused), lower nutrition costs, there is no nutrition pollution released into the environment, the stable system results in higher yields, and lastly pests and diseases are easier to remove.

Bergen County Hydroponics has a selection of indoor and outdoor gardening supplies. Some of the supplies are organic, while others, such as the fertilizers, come from inorganic sources. Customers can buy fertilizers, organic pesticides, plant hormones for propagating cuttings, and several growing mediums such as compost, worm castings, clay pellets, and stonewool.

Hydroponic growers can purchase complete growing systems or separate hydroponics parts. Grow lights and related equipment are also available.

There is something at Bergen County Hydroponics for both the traditional organic gardener and the modern hydroponic grower. This friendly store, is just down the road from River Edge and Oradell.
