HACKENSACK — Boz and the Bard Productions (B&B) continues its play-reading series "Play with a Play" with a drama that deals with sensitive racial tensions after a terrible mishap occurs during a police chase. Residents are invited to participate in the reading and further development of this play at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. at the Center For Modern Dance Education, 84 Euclid Ave. in Hackensack.

"dEAD dOG pARK," by Barry Malawer, opens on the frantic conversation between two officers immediately following the four story fall by one of the alleged criminal youths being chased through an abandoned building. Did the white officer push the black teenager out the window, or was it a terrible accident, as the office maintains? The play explores what happens before and after the officer’s trial, and the impact the event has on the policeman, his wife, his partner, the boy’s mother, and of course, the boy. The play was inspired by a true incident that occurred in Yonkers, NY. "dEAD dOG pARK" marks Malawer’s third full-length play. His last play, "Cadillac," was developed at the Blueberry Pond Arts Center in Jeffrey Sweet’s Monday Night Workshop. It was subsequently produced by the Supporting Characters, under the direction of Cynthia Granville at the Bendheim Arts Center in Westchester. His first play, "Chrysler," was produced at Manhattan’s Pelican Theatre by the LITC, under the direction of Georgia McGill.

About Play With a Play

Boz and the Bard's "Play With a Play" continues its dedication to nurturing playwrights by offering a venue to hear their works read aloud. Simultaneously, the program provides a unique, casual playground for actors and theater fans to spend a Saturday night. Steve Hess and Frank Avellino, as the program directors, guide participants through the process. Audiences need only bring their interest in theater in order to participate in an evening of live entertainment. Attendees can take a script in hand and be part of the show, or sit back and watch the story unfold.

For less than the price of a movie, the "Play with a Play" sessions will continue monthly at the Center for Modern Dance Education. Admisstion is $10 at the door, $7 for students and seniors.
