question about Hackensack
« on: March 17, 2011, 10:17:42 PM »
Was there ever a swimming hole at the corner of Anderson St. and River St. on the N.E. corner across from Sears where the park is? I thought I remember a place to swim there but I may be thinking of the one further North across from Continental Plaza.

I also remember the small amusement park and zoo that was at the location of the garden apt.s on Old New Bridge Rd. behind what was the Donut Shop,  also just South of one of the biggest auto junk yards in Bergen County the final resting place of a couple of my old clunkers that were worth more dead than alive and running.

You're probably thinking of Maplecrest Beach: http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php?topic=405.msg845#msg845

and Kiddieland: http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php?topic=604.msg2845#msg2845

Before my time, unfortunately.

Your memory is accurate.

Here's the Hackensack Pool link and picture:

Thanks Bob.  I forgot about this one.  So, in other words, there used to be a pool at Johnson Park?

I found another reference on this site about the pool from irons35:

http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php?topic=1259.0

The comment was "I believe the terheun house was roughly located on the sears parking lot. it was torn down to make way for the Hackensack pool, which was filled in to make  parking lot for sears."

Thanks for the info. The pool I was asking about is definitely the one shown on the post card. My memory of it is probably from about 1950 or so. Does anyone know what years it was in operation?

There is another reference to the history of Johnson Park in this link and if anyone here is a NY Times subscriber you can read the entire article.
