HACKENSACK — Juanita Trammell, a former city councilwoman and deputy mayor known for her decades of community service, has died while visiting relatives in North Carolina, her pastor said Friday.

Mrs. Trammell, 81, had become ill Monday and died suddenly on Tuesday, according to a death notice. She had been visiting relatives in Raleigh, N.C., her birthplace, said Jonathan Whitfield, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Hackensack. He said he did not know the cause of her death.

Mrs. Trammell served as the city’s deputy mayor for three terms and was a community advocate for the Hackensack school system, according to her death notice. She retired from public service seven years ago, Whitfield said, but continued to be a community leader, working with her church’s missionary ministry to help provide food for poor and homeless people.

“She was big on enjoying life,” Whitfield said. “I will always remember her smile.”

Mrs. Trammell received a Life Membership from the New Jersey Congress of Parents and Teachers for her involvement with the schools. She had worked in the communications department of the Bergen County Police Department until retiring in 1996.

Her husband, James T. Trammell, died in 1991. She is survived by two sons, Terrance and James and a goddaughter, Jazmyne, whom she raised like a daughter, the death notice said.

A funeral service will be held Monday, 7:30 p.m., at Trinity Baptist Church on Passaic Street. The family is asking for donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the Hackensack Blue & Gold Scholarship Fund or Trinity Baptist Church.

She was known as a loyal councilperson to Mayor Jack Zisa.  She replaced Sandra Robinson on the "Continue Progressive Leadership" ticket in 1993, and she served three terms from 1993 to 2005.  She represented the city's African-American community, although she personally had little or no black ancestry.  She was a Native American, unsure what tribe, possibly Cherokee.
