HACKENSACK The City Council has demanded that the City Clerk step down and has vowed to take steps to remove her if she does not.

The council voted unanimously Monday night to file a written complaint with the state seeking Debra Hecks removal, saying she failed to perform her job duties, if she does not resign immediately. Heck said she will not give up her position.

I am not resigning, said Heck, the city clerk since 2002. I didnt do anything wrong.

HACKENSACK - City Clerk Debra Heck resigned Friday morning, less than two weeks after the City Council passed a resolution demanding that she step down.

Heck's lawyer, Richard Salkin, sent a letter to the mayor and council on her behalf saying she was stepping down, effective immediately, "due to the intolerable working atmosphere created for her by the administration." Salkin also suggested that Heck may file a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city.

Ousted Hackensack clerk readies emails for legal fight

HACKENSACK The ousted city clerk's romantic ties to a political foe of the administration were fodder for emails by a city councilwoman, who called the clerk a political operative who couldn't be trusted and compared her to a "coiled snake."

Clerk Debra Heck, who agreed last month to the council's demand for her resignation, said the emails were proof that she was targeted for political purposes in a new administration because she is the fiance of school board lawyer Richard Salkin. She said she intends to sue the city for civil rights violations, even though council members have maintained that their decision was based on Heck's job performance.

The former Hackensack clerk is suing the city, the former interim manager and all five City Council members for in excess of $2 million over claims they illegally retaliated against her and drove her out of her job because of her personal relationship with a political foe of the administration.

Debra Heck, who left the job in December, filed the lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Newark. Heck said in the complaint that she resigned because of hostile and intolerable working conditions and intimidation by her superiors.

The alleged hostility began when council members learned that she was in a romantic relationship with Richard Salkin, a former city attorney who is aligned with the councils political opponents, according to the lawsuit.

Throwing her lover under the bus.  Secrecy means nothing when $2m is on the line.  How convenient.  And what will Salkin's wife say about all of that.

Justwatching: you don't know that.  You are making assumptions that may very well be wrong.

No need to reply.

OK. Just because SHE SAID she was in a romantic relationship with person xyz, doesn't mean that actually happened.  How does one prove that in court, I wonder ?  This will be interesting.
