Recent Odds and Ends for 2017
« Reply #15 on: April 07, 2017, 04:30:18 PM »
1. Two World Trade Center rises.

2. My old Hitachi sits atop the VCR-Printer-Small Fridge snowy-peaked mountain awaiting the technology trash haulers.

3. This is the brightest and shiniest I've ever seen the First Presbyterian Church's steeple since its recent makeover.

4. The steeple photobombs the First Baptist Church's school flag.

5. Someone on the first floor of my building has apparently enlisted Divine Intervention in keeping those windows and doors closed (I know the landlord didn't do it).

6. Window installation

7. Stuffed bra

8. Interesting cloud colors on the moon

9. Photographing Ladies Liberty while stopped at the light at Mercer and Main. I love candids - especially when compared with the posed shot the Hackensack Daily Voice recently ran (no sun on one poor guy's face). Here's the Rutherford DV version: http://rutherford.dailyvoice.com/lifestyle/drivers-see-double-ladies-of-liberty-in-hackensack/704806/

10. & 11. Each truck gets four bucketloads...........always shoot on the fourth one.

12. & 13.The sun's blinding rays were reflected off this Jersey City building right into my living room on March 4 and 5.

14. Meanwhile, about a dozen feet west of the previous image stands this cool guy, who's about 7' tall. I think this is my favorite shot of the year so far.

15. This just in: after yesterday's storm passed, I saw the top few floors of 432 Park Ave in Manhattan sticking out above the clouds that appeared to hover over the Hudson River..........but it's hard to be sure about where the clouds actually were from looking at something that's 5-7 miles away in a two-dimensional picture. BTW - the illuminated building in the lower center is the Marlboro House on Main St in Ridgefield Park.

These are some photos I've taken since June, but never got around to posting:

1. Need a taillight?

2. Good at stretching, bad at parking

3. New to the concept of doors

4, 5. School buses

6. Church luncheon

7. Live party streamers

8. To me, this looked like a 1950s robot visiting a French boudoir, but it was actually taken in a doctor's office (and had NOTHING to do with my visit).

9. From my living room, I heard a real noisy bunch of crows and found them perched atop 40 Passaic St. I KNEW that they'd all take off at once, so I waited. Sure enough..............

10. Signal from the high rises

11. Classy-sounding name

12. Wire runner

13. It's all spelled out on the image.

14. Ridgefield steam meets Jersey City construction.

15, 16. A two-image, side-by side photo stitch came out a little weird, but a top-and-bottom one worked MUCH better.

A Dozen Recent Odds and Ends
« Reply #18 on: March 30, 2018, 07:40:08 PM »
1. Under the River St RR trestle

2. "UCEDA SCHOOL"? No - I don't see da school.

3. Inside the school that I don't see is a second set of light switches and electrical boxes that aren't there (but a mirror is).

4. The interior of Geri's Deli on Main St

5. The four current city rehab projects that I can shoot from my living room

6. Hanging by a thread..........

7. Things that we won't be able to see this time next year: YOU - buses on Main St, ME - the entire scene

8. A little touchup needed on the River Walkway by Costco

9. Two of the old steeple windows from the First Presbyterian Church

10. ESB (NYC) - Smokestack (Bogota) - Crane (Hackensack)

11. Out of the church lot and into the E lot

12. I finally found a half-century-old little black book of mine that I had been looking for because someone you know signed it back then on 42nd St in Manhattan...............someone whose "new" name hadn't been fully accepted yet (and which I misspelled).

Odds and Ends for 2018
« Reply #19 on: October 10, 2018, 02:12:50 PM »
Stuff accumulates on my desktop during the year. Today is one of many cleaning days.

1, 2. Why workers wear hard hats (protection from flying bird poop)

3. Two projects, two banks and a courthouse. Wells Fargo REALLY needs to get rid of all that unsightly cell equipment.

4. Preparing for two-way traffic at Main and Passaic

5. Lotsuckers

6. When the first 200 feet or so of State St was closed one morning last week because of construction equipment and a small water company dig, all traffic was diverted to Ward St. It was pretty slow-going trying to turn onto busy Union St, but some truck drivers were smart enough navigate the E lot to turn back onto State St and continue their journey.

7. The Riviera Lounge must have HUGE expansion plans...............look at their new parking garage!

8. Another gift from StarKist tuna - I didn't know they had a crunchy version.

9. I could see these architectural delights atop the building at Passaic and Prospect from my apartment (I know they have a name, but I just can't think of it).

10. Looking one block past Passaic and Prospect, this shows the same picture as the previous one, including the foliage with the hole in it ("holiage"?), the Watchung Mountains valley (including Garret Mountain in Paterson), and the triple-cross on the Methodist church at Summit and Passaic.......................but with a much cooler-looking sky.

11, 12. These two across-the-street-from-each-other images were taken on E. Ward St between Main and River. (#11) I'm guessing someone traded in their truck for a motorcycle? (#12) It's just too weird-looking to make up a story for.

13 - UPDATE! - Here's the finished product: doors that appear to open only from the inside. That means the original garage door must be gone...............how boring!

14. Attention all you sign demanders! The wait is over, according to the new sign on top of the former Geri's. Now what happens?

15. This is another of those "Photos I'll never be able to take again" shots. After January or so, the 389 Main 5-story residential monstrosity being built will completely block my 30-year view of the Kipp's Bend section of the river and any boats on its surface. On the plus side..............

16..............I'll still be able to see The Modern I & II in Fort Lee, but because 389 Main's 5th-floor tenants will need to use the elevator, an elevator room will have to be built on the roof and with my luck, it'll block these towers.

Click to enlarge and stay tuned.

These were all taken on one interesting morning a couple of weeks ago:

1,2. Two from home

3. I've posted part of this here before, but not the whole scene.

4. I don't think I've gotten this angle before, but I'm glad I got it here.

5. On the pedestrian bridge between the Teaneck and Hackensack FDU campuses

6. The Current on River project from the river at FDU........it almost looks on the river.

7. From the river walkway near the northern end of Johnson Park

8. I've posted part of the same sign that's by the tracks - this is the whole sign on Main St facing Sears.

9. This is a stitch of the Hackensack River taken from FDU.

1. Adios, Kates

2. Officer Squillace on the job

3. (top) The big cleanout.  (bottom) "You forgot something". (I had a feeling this would happen.............that's why I took the top shot)

4. EMERGENCY! No parking on the sidewalk!

5. As bingo fades away.............

6. Bed King (front)

7. Bed King (back)

8. From a distance, I thought this guy was a 389 Main project worker.

9. At the Second Reformed Church last Sunday

10. I see a potential pairing here.

11. This is my spare. I hope I don't get a flat because it'll stick out like a sore shiny thumb against my other wheels (it's too expensive to get them all done).

12. Yeah, I kinda expected that when the bell sounded, the lights flashed and the gates came down. BTW - you may recall that I posted a similar picture last July (http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,3746). I just noticed that this is the exact same rail car and banner (probably). Both looked a lot better last year (so did New Jersey Transit).

Re: Recent Odds and Ends

Lately, I've really been getting into shooting more ridiculously-long cars, etc., with the iPhone PANO setting (future blog post), but while I'm doing that, I'm finding other things to shoot as well. These are some of the recent oh-by-the-way shots.

Click most of the images to enlarge (there are about half-a-dozen PANOS in this group).

1. No cars here, but I had never seen this view of the First Presbyterian Church's steeple from the First Baptist Church's property before.

2. I don't know how much longer we'll see Bruce The Bed King's smiling face, so here's what that block on Main currently looks like. There are a couple of strange vehicles (or maybe it was just one) on the road that happened to come along while I was taking this shot. They (or it) were/was traveling north in the southbound lane, which looks rather dangerous, so I cropped the picture to give you..............

3. .............this image. Bruce looks comparatively sane. And notice the two fading signs on the right that say: "Colony's Warehouse". Before it was called "Bruce The Bed King", it was the Colony Sleep Center.

4. Jumping over to River St, I took this rather drab photo of the Sears Auto Center..............

5. ..............but over in the corner was a much more interesting image. You'd be hard-pressed to find 3 more-architectually-different buildings in such a compressed space.

6. This super-wide PANO shot may not look look like this for long. The Bruce block will be replaced by yet another big apartment building and who knows WHAT will happen with Sears.......

7. Somewhere on the Sears property, I found this open and uncovered rectangular hole that someone could easily fall into. I should have taken a wider shot for perspective, but - trust me - somebody should really remedy this situation promptly.

8. Sears has been closed now for a year-and-a-half. You'd think someone in authority would have cleaned up this eyesore by now (and some of those tires - at first glance - don't look too bad).

9. Closeup (and someone left their shoes on the landing)

10,11. Continuing south on River St, I found these two items between Anderson St and Passaic St.

12. Swinging back up to Main St, I came across yet another sign (on the old Geri's Deli) that's trying to convince people that "The Sack" isn't the dopiest name ever - an impossible task. Most people with a brain in their head are too embarrassed to even utter the name. STOP THROWING MONEY AT THIS NAME..........IT'LL NEVER WORK!

13. Almost home, I saw this gigantic crane hoisting some wood, but wasn't sure where it was located...............until I got home and saw that it was part of the Main-Berry-State-Camden project.

14. Speaking of which...........I noticed yesterday that they've begun tearing down a building that appears to be on Camden St. I'll have to get over there whenever it finally stops raining.

15,16. Today, I thought I saw a huge chain-link fence being pulled out of the ground by a crane. Then I noticed it was also in yesterday's shot, so it appears to be a demolition shield being held in place by the crane.
