Welcome to Hackensack signs
« on: January 31, 2012, 03:45:10 AM »
It so much annoys me that the "Welcome to Hackensack" signs are so far from the actual borders of the city.  The new one on Spring Valley Ave is over one block inside of Hackensack.   Also South River Street, the sign is many blocks from Little Ferry. Can't they move that one to the International Navistar property that is actually on the border.  And the one on Hackensack Ave SOUTH of Route 4 gives the impression that the Shops at Riverside and Continental Plaza are not in Hackensack. Bad move there.  Why shrink Hackensack so much, and possibly mislead people who don't live here to call the wrong police or fire department in an emergency, such as a car accident.

My understanding is that when the signage system was designed, it was determined that the actual town borders did not always provide the best spot for the welcome signs. Issues they considered included property ownership, ability to dig footings at given locations, drainage, "line of sight" for motorists, attractiveness of the surrounding area and a host of other factors.  In a perfect world, the welcome signs would be at the borders.  The green county signs delineate borders.  The way finding signage system as a different aim.

Funny how the County didn't have those problems.  They were able to dig their footings, ignore the property owner's objections, resolve drainage issues, etc.

And Hackensack's signs are so tall it hardly seems that line-of-sight would matter much.

The county signs weigh all of 20 pounds.  You can stick them anywhere. Gateway way finding signs weigh hundreds of pounds. They are an entirely different animal. They also have to be high enough so pedestrians walking under them don't hit them.  In many cases, the panel hangs over the sidewalk.

Also, the signs do not say "Entering Hackensack" or "Hackensack Border".  They say "Welcome to Hackensack".  Since when do you need to welcome somebody to your town the second they enter it?  Personally, I think it makes sense to welcome people at the right opportunity at the right stretch of roadway. When someone comes to your home, do you welcome them at the curb or in your living room?

There are plenty of examples where welcome signs are placed well within borders.
