HACKENSACK — A two-alarm high-rise fire sent two people to the hospital with smoke inhalation Tuesday morning, a fire official said.

The fire broke out in an air conditioning unit in an apartment on the 23rd floor of 160 Overlook Ave. The doorman called 911 to report the fire about 3:45 a.m., said Fire Department Lt. Justin Derevyanik.

Two residents of the apartment escaped the burning apartment after being woken up by smoke alarms. Firefighters found them in a stairwell on the 21st floor. The residents, a man and a woman, were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for smoke inhalation, and are expected to recover, Derevyanik said.

Another resident from the 25th floor was treated for smoke inhalation but refused to go to the hospital. Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire left the apartment on the 23rd floor uninhabitable, and an apartment below had water damage.
