Barricaded Hackensack man cuts himself, throws intestines at police

"The scene was a bloody mess," a police official told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. "The SWAT team members had to be decontaminated due to the amount of blood."

[The man], 43, remained in critical condition at Hackensack University Medical Center this afternoon following emergency surgery just after midnight.

The incident began less than an hour earlier, when a 911 call came in to Hackensack police that a man was cutting himself with a large knife, records show.

When officers arrived at the single-family home on Clay Street, four blocks north of Hackensack High School, the 6-foot-3-inch [man] began waving the large knife and a hammer at police.

"They tried to talk him down, but they were having no luck. He was slashing at them with the knife," Hackensack Police Lt. Timothy Lloyd told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. "The officers took the prudent step of backing off and calling in the [Bergen County PD] SWAT team."

They arrived at 11:40 and, using beanbag projectiles, disarmed the man.

"His intestines were literally hanging out" when he was taken to the hospital, one police official told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Lloyd acknowledged that the man -- whom CLIFFVIEW PILOT later identified as [...]-- had to be "wrapped up" before being taken away.

"Our officers handled themselves extremely well, given what they faced," the lieutenant said. "It should be noted that it was a great job by the Bergen County SWAT team, as always."

[The man's] rap sheet shows a history of violence dating back to 1999, including arrests for aggravated assault on police, resisting arrest, making threats and disorderly conduct.

[The man] spent nearly a month in the county jail late last year after a November disorderly conduct arrest that involved resisting arrest and terroristic threats, records show.

Hackensack police union looks to help turn the page with first-ever merit awards

 HACKENSACK — Dozens of officers were honored for their achievements in police work last week at the Hackensack police union's first-ever merit awards.

Det. James Dalton, the union's vice president, said that the force had been plagued controversy and plenty of bad press in recent years, which often took a toll on morale. Even within the union, where former Chief Ken Zisa allegedly used the threat of discipline to impose his will, the divisions ran deep.

Zisa was fired earlier this year following convictions on official misconduct and insurance fraud charges. While legal entanglements remain for some members of the department, Dalton and PBA Local #9 President John Herrmann have decided that the time was right to focus on the rank and file's good work.

"Despite everything that's gone on within the city and the police department, there's still a lot of hard working officers out there doing the job every day," he said.

"We're all about morale, camaraderie and brotherhood, and we want to bring people together of every rank. We might not be the one's responsible for it being broken, but we're still in this together."

The ceremony, which took place in Hackensack City Hall's Council Chambers on Oct. 24, recognized more than 30 officers.

They included officers Stephen Ochman, Justin De La Bruyere, Jason Sawyer, Greg Kiselow, Matt Jacobsen and Patrick Williams, who were recognized for their bravery in a May 27 incident during which a mentally disturbed man threw pieces of his intestines at them, and Detectives John Dalton, Ryan Weber and Alexander Lopez-Arenas, who helped solve a two-year-old robbery by linking a YouTube video to the crime.
