Anderson Street sewer line redux
« on: May 30, 2012, 08:22:01 PM »
This scene looks kinda familiar.................maybe from a couple of years ago and a couple blocks east?

I'm guessing this is preventive work on the same sewer line so that a similar collapse doesn't occur in the heart of the street's business section.

Actually, I shouldn't be guessing. We already discussed this here - http://www.hackensacknow.org/index.php/topic,2169 - last November.

PHOTOS

1. This is the sign that was erected in Anderson Park last November that (sort of) announced what's going on now.

2. I knew that Anderson St would be closed today, so I decided to take some better pictures. For the overall shot, I sometimes like the condensed version taken from 3 blocks away better than the point-blank one, so I took the second image from just east of Union St.

3. On the almost-discarded point-blank image, I zoomed in and noticed two signs. One was the crude, hand-made one for classy Rudy's Restaurant and the other was on the red vehicle, where some lucky woman has been immortalized on the top of a Mack truck as "Cheryl the Great" (assuming, of course, that the trucker didn't name his truck that).

4. This is one of those shots you take just to see how it comes out.

5. One of the things I wanted to do here today was to ask someone in charge if the old brick pipe might be exposed at some point and if I could get some photos of it. That approximately 125 year-old pipe is historically important not only for its age, but because the bricks were manufactured locally along the bank of the Hackensack River in Hackensack or Little Ferry.

During the previous five-month repair between Union St and Main St, I got ONE cellphone shot of the brick sewer pipe. It was a good shot, but it was the only picture I got and a low-res cell shot at that, so I wanted to upgrade, if possible.

I found the foreman (fifth picture) standing by the current excavation. I explained to him what I wanted to do, but he didn't seem too interested. I asked him when might be a better time to come back and he couldn't say, so I told him that I'll just keep coming back and maybe hit a good day.

6. As I was walking away, he called me back and motioned for me to come over to where he was (same spot as in the fifth picture). I looked down and this is what I saw. Bingo!

7. This is a similar shot that was cropped and turned sideways.

(you can click on 6 and 7 to enlarge a bit)

8. As I started to thank the foreman, he pointed to the dirt area shown on the left of photo #5 and said I could also shoot from there. It wasn't really safe to get right up to the boards from that angle and the boards blocked a lot of the view, so I could only kneel down and position the camera near the ground and take this shot. Unfortunately, the new pipe blocked some of the old one from this angle and was pretty much whited-out by the bright sun, so I didn't take any more pictures.

But I already had what I wanted, so I thanked him and left.

You'd think this would be a good oppy for Hackensack to separate the stormwater and sanitary lines, at least for this block.   From the dimensions of the pipe (huge), it looks like that is not what is going on.
