WWII bomber "Yankee Lady" over Hackensack
« on: June 17, 2012, 04:41:55 PM »
If you didn't see it flying over Hackensack this weekend, you probably heard it. The "Yankee Lady" was in town for the old plane show at Teterboro this weekend and was giving 40-minute flights around the area at $450 a pop.

Sitting at my computer, I heard that unmistakable low rumble a few times and then took pictures, but the plane wasn't really close enough for good shots.

The first two pictures were taken yesterday and the other one today. That last one shows a really low approach into Teterboro - planes are usually above golden Enlightenment and the low ones barely get belly-tickled by her torch, from my perspective.

Keep your camera handy this weekend.

The "Yankee Lady" is back at Teterboro. If you hear low, rumbling engines overhead on Saturday or Sunday that sound like they belong in the soundtrack of an old WWII movie, look up and take a picture............and post it here.

Even with the windows closed, I could hear the plane, but I couldn't find it.

Finally, I saw it when it was well past me and coming into Teterboro.

First sighting: 7:54pm in crappy weather. I hope no one was paying for an expensive ride on this flight.

Hackensack got gypped!

For two days, the Yankee Lady took off from Teterboro and made a quick turn east. Maybe if you were between Costco and Rt 80, you could have gotten some good shots. On the return trip, it flew south somewhere between the Hackensack and Hudson rivers.

Generally, I couldn't hear it until it was past me. I did catch a couple of takeoffs when I was on my roof, but at no time was the plane within a mile of me, so these shots are kind of stretched to the limit. I did better two years ago when the plane took a friendlier local route.

The first 3 photos have to do with takeoff. You can see some Teterboro airplane hangers, the Pulaski Skyway(!), and the tall Main St banks, as the plane heads east.

The next 2 are the tightest shots I could get of the YL. Remember, it's over a mile away.

6,7,8 show the plane and Midtown Manhattan, 1WTC, and Enlightenment on top of the BC Courthouse (similar to two years ago in previous post).

9 and 10 are just slightly unusual. 9 appears to show the plane landing on the old Bank of America building at 210 Main. 10 is looking directly east as the plane is probably over the Bronx, but along the bottom are a blimp, a large bird (I think), and the new tower by the GWB.

All in all, it was a disappointment, photo-wise.
