THE RECORD

HACKENSACK — Martin Luther King Jr., rendered in a heroic-sized bronze statue in a rough-textured finish, gazed resolutely from a black marble pedestal toward the northwest on Sunday, the Hackensack River flowing under a brilliant autumn sky behind him.

Hundreds of people gathered at a brick-paved circular memorial site on the Fairleigh Dickinson University campus amid the spiced aroma of multi-hued chrysanthemums to witness a white plastic wrap pulled from the 7 1/2-foot figure of the civil rights leader, who was slain by an assassin in Memphis 46 years ago at the age of 39.

I don't know everyone there and I didn't shoot everything. Some things I edited out because a better shot came up later.

Except for the last image, I'm posting everything in sequence. Consequently, I'll let the program (first image) - which contains one or two no-shows - do the talking. Hopefully, you can match things up. If you have a good imagination (or a good bottle of wine), you might hear singing ("We Shall Overcome") in images 33-35 if you put your ear to your monitor screen.

During the ceremony, I located Hackensack Mayor LaBrosse, Deputy Mayor Canestrino, and Councilman Sims and mentioned that I'd like to get a shot of them by the statue when the festivities ended. As it turned out, the hundreds of people in attendance had the same idea. It was a happy mob scene.

The shot that I got was a close as we could get. I didn't want them to have to squint in the bright sun, but I just couldn't convince Martin to accommodate us and face a different direction.

The shot after that one shows Englewood mayor Frank Huttle III, his wife Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle, MLK statue sculptor Richard Blake, and Hackensack Mayor John LaBrosse.

By the way, I saw former Mayor Marlin Townes there. He's in the lower center of the 10th photo - well, his back is there - and he's wearing a tan jacket.

If you're not familiar with photo stitches, they are multiple side-by-side images that are digitally stitched together to make a single, more panoramic image. There are 2 stitches in this collection and each stitch is made up of 4 images. It was the only way that I could show the most people in one photo.

Click on the stitches to enlarge them and then start scrolling to the right. You can click on the other images to enlarge them also.

I am glad they were not offended, and you were working with them.  I believe that it is a general rule at these types of events not to post photos before an unveiling.
