HACKENSACK - In honor of all the lives lost during the Newtown, Conn. shooting, Hackensack's City Council unanimously approved a resolution at the Dec. 18 meeting that requests all holiday lights and decorations - including the city's Christmas Tree on The Green - be left dark on Dec. 19
"In honor of the Sandy Hook [School] victims, the tree and all city decorations [along Hackensack's] streets will not be turned on Dec. 19," Hackensack Mayor Michael Melfi said.
While all lights will be "back on the following day," Melfi told all those present that the remembrance of all those who perished will still continue.
"[Though] lights will be back on, we will continue to keep the victims and their families in our thoughts and prayers throughout the holiday season," he said.
Hackensack residents were also urged, during the passing of the resolution, to take part in this act of solidarity and respect by not turning on their own festive lights and decorations on this night.
