Two-house fire on Park St
« on: March 17, 2013, 10:04:15 AM »
I just went out on my roof and saw emergency vehicles, including fire trucks on Park St by Conklin Pl - one short block south of Anderson St. I could smell burnt wood, but the fire was out.

Two houses on the west side of Park appeared to have sustained heavy damage with one house's roof collapsed.

This must have happened early this morning. Similar to when the Anderson St RR station burned down, I again vaguely remember smelling smoke and falling back asleep.

This must have been quite a blaze, but I haven't found anything about it online yet.

1. View from my roof

2. View at the scene. I spoke to a cop who thought the fire may have started around 3-4am, but wasn't sure. I didn't find out if everyone got out OK.

3. Hackensack's bravest (note the ice-coated bush in the center)

4. Collapsed roof

5. What awaits - unfortunately - on Conklin Place.

HACKENSACK — An early Sunday morning fire destroyed a Park Street home, severely damaged another and sent two people to the hospital with injuries, authorities said.

Firefighters on the scene of the fire on Park Street in Hackesack Sunday.

A 28-year-old firefighter from Engine Company 2 hurt his back after slipping and falling on icy ground, and a woman who was being evacuated from a nearby house suffered an asthma attack after inhaling smoke, said Justin Derevyanik, spokesman for the Hackensack Fire Department.

Both were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. Their conditions were unknown on Sunday morning.

Authorities believe the blaze started in a first-floor bedroom at 433 Park Street and spread to 435 Park Street, Derevyanik said.

Firefighters, alerted to the fire at 4:56 a.m., arrived to find thick smoke billowing out of the 2½-story wood frame house and the flames already leaping to the second home, also a 2½ story wood house, he said.

The homeowners, asleep in the house’s second floor when the fire started, roused the second-floor tenants, and they all escaped, Derevyanik said.

Firefighters fought the three-alarm blaze for about an hour and a half, a task made difficult by windy and icy conditions, Derevyanik said.

About 55 Hackensack firefighters, along with companies from neighboring Teaneck, Bogota and Ridgefield Park responded, he said.

The house where the fire started is expected to be demolished later on Sunday, he said. The charred roof and attic had collapsed onto to the top floor.

The second house also sustained heavy damage to the top floor. The siding melted from the heat, Derevyanik said.

The house didn’t have working a smoke detector, Derevyanik said. The city fire department has a program that provides free smoke detectors to residents who cannot afford them, he said.

Four families — a total of 11 people — were displaced. They were at the Hackensack Civic Center on Sunday morning, receiving assistance from the American Red Cross, he said.

While I was typing my previous post, the more heavily-damaged house was already knocked down, as I just found out from the roof.

You can see a stream of water in the upper area just to the right of center.

Wow, I can't believe there's been ANOTHER fire on or very near Park Street.  There's been so many in about the past 10 years

- 269 Park Street; house owned by Nigito Realty.
- SE corner of Park & Berry; which seriously affecting Mr. Lang's house next door on Park Street, which is now abandoned.
- Clay Street one house west of Park Street
- Passaic Street one house west of Park Street (now part of the parking lot of a funeral home)

If there is any fund set up to help the families, please post that information here.

I'm paranoid about fire in our house.  I've seen too many homes go up in flames.  I have more than the required number of smoke detectors. I have fire extinquishers on every floor.  We used an extinquisher to put out an outdoor grill fire three years ago.

I make sure my daughter knows what to do in a fire. "Get low and go," she says.  We practice getting out from time to time.

There are several vacant lots around town where fires destroyed homes that were never rebuilt.  At least two on Clinton Pl. now.  One or two on Park St. as well. The emply lots serve as eery reminders.

The day after:

1. What the scene looks like today from my roof

2. 433 Park St

3. Closeup of previous photo

4. 435 Park St

5. 433 and 435

6. Closeup of previous photo

7. A girl's basketball, a wire fish, and.............a bustier? What happens with all this stuff in a situation like this? Is it dumped and spread out somewhere so that the family can pick through it and recover some cherished possessions? Do they just have to kiss it all goodbye?

8. 435 is already being resuscitated by an aptly-named company - CPR ("Bringing your property back to life").

9. A CPR worker trying to get all the roof openings covered up before the snow and rain arrive later today.

There's a great shot on page 6 (first pic) that appears to have been taken from atop the apartment building at 5 Pangborn Place.

I'm envious......................and I wish I woke up 3 hours earlier on Sunday.

Over a year-and-a-half later, 435 Park is finally getting a new roof.

The first picture was taken last Thursday and the second was taken during yesterday's winds.

It's probably a fight between the owners and the insurance company wherein the insurance company.  Often insurance companies wants to pay as little as it can despite the fact that it will cost so much more to repair it.
