 November 15, 2013

LIBRARY FINES WILL BE FORGIVEN FOR FOOD FOR THE NEEDY

(Hackensack, NJ) The Johnson Public Library in Hackensack is offering overdue book borrowers the chance to wipe their slate clean and serve a worthy cause at the same time, announced Councilwoman Rose Greenman, the council liaison to the city’s Library Board.

Those whose books are overdue can donate food items to the needy in the value of their library fines and have their fines waived. The library at 274 Main Street will accept canned goods, boxed food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies from November 18 through November 26.

Those without overdue book fines can also donate.

The donated items will be distributed to local food pantries: The Center for Food Action and Buddies of N.J.

“This is a wonderful way for book lovers who may have loved their library book a little too long to help the needy as we head into the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Greenman. “I want to thank the library director for coming up with a creative way to help those in our community who are in need.”

HACKENSACK — In an initiative that aimed to assist the city's needy, while simultaneously forgiving the library fees of patrons with overdue books, the Johnson Public Library held a week-long "Food for Fines" program.

The initiative, which ran from Nov. 18 to 26, asked Hackensack patrons whose books were overdue to donate food items to the needy in the value of their library fines and, as a result, have the fines waived.
