Hackensack police are investigating a reported luring attempt Monday morning a few blocks from the city’s middle school, authorities said.

A white or Hispanic male with a goatee approached a student walking to school around Union and Lawrence streets at 7:36 a.m. and asked for help to look for a lost dog, Hackensack Police Capt. Thomas Salcedo said. The child declined.

The man, reported to be between 20- and 30-years-old, was last seen driving a black two-door Honda north on Union Street, Salcedo said. The incident was reported to police at 8:53 a.m.

Hackensack police on Tuesday released a composite drawing of a suspect in a luring incident in which a man tried to persuade a 13-year-old middle school student to get into his car to help find a lost puppy.

The student was on his way to Hackensack Middle School shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Monday, said Detective Sgt. Niles Malvasia, when a man in a black two-door Honda Civic pulled over to the side of Union Street and said he needed help finding his daughter’s lost puppy.

“The child did exactly what he was supposed to do,” Malvasia said. “He said, ‘No, sir, I can’t help you,’ and he ran up Union Street to school and told administrators what happened.”

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic male with dark spiked hair and a goatee.

Malvasia said the description did not match descriptions of other luring suspects in nearby communities over the last week. “This looks like an isolated case,” he said.
