Bergen County and NJ Transit are studying ways to improve bus service.

HACKENSACK — The public can give feedback on a study Wednesday to create a better bus service in Bergen County.

The Bergen County department of Planning and Economic Development and NJ Transit are inviting residents to an open house and presentation on a study to implement a Bus Rapid Transit system in the county.

Bus Rapid Transit is a catch-all term for bus systems with features like fewer stops, exclusive bus lanes and off-board ticket purchases. The BRT Implementation Study team is considering which improvements to include in a future system.
The team has narrowed down a list of potential routes for a BRT system. The routes include service from the Montvale Park and Ride to the Lincoln Tunnel and from Paterson to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station.

Commuters expressed guarded optimism about the prospect of improved bus service in the county at a February public meeting. The feedback from that meeting helped winnow the potential routes for the proposed Bergen BRT system.

The public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Phillip Ciarco Learning Center on the Hackensack campus of Bergen Community College, rooms 102 and 103.

BERGEN COUNTY — Officials have narrowed a list of possible routes for bus rapid transit down to a "preferred" five.

The Bergen County Department of Planning and Economic Development, NJ Transit and a consultant team are studying how and where to create a bus rapid transit system.

While the definition of bus rapid transit is somewhat amorphous, such systems are generally specially designed to be faster and higher capacity than regular bus lines.

The five routes go 1) from the Montvale Park & Ride to Port Authority Bus Terminal 2) from Bergen Community College to Secaucus Junction 3) from Englewood Hospital to Secaucus Junction 4) from Garden State Plaza to Port Authority Bus Terminal and 5) from Broadway Bus Terminal in Paterson to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station.

The routes selected by the study team were created to connect key transportation nodes, like the Montvale Park & Ride or Secaucus Junction, and activity centers, like Bergen Community College or Englewood Hospital.

The study team selected the five routes based on these criteria:

• improving mobility for inter and intra county needs and destinations

• enhancing transit performance with improved bus travel times and schedule reliability

•enhancing overall system efficiency by improving utilization and efficiency of existing street networks and optimizing bus service on connecting routes

• enhancing community livability

• improving economic growth

The study team will study the five routes further to create an implementation plan for bus rapid transit.

HACKENSACK — A study on bringing bus rapid transit to Bergen County has culled a list of potential routes down to three.

They are:

• Montvale Park and Ride to Secaucus Junction, with stops at Paramus Park Mall, Bergen Community College, Garden State Plaza, a future Summit Avenue bus stop in Hackensack, the Meadowlands and Harmon Meadow.

• Paramus Park to Secaucus Junction, with stops at Bergen Town Center, downtown Hackensack, the Meadowlands and the Bergen Community College Lyndhurst campus. The downtown Hackensack stops include Hackensack University Medical Center, the Essex Street train station, the Bergen County Courthouse and the Hackensack bus terminal.

• Paterson’s Broadway Bus Terminal to Englewood Hospital, with stops at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Garden State Plaza, downtown Hackensack and Overpeck County Park.

Bergen County, NJ Transit and a team of consultants presented the routes Thursday night at the Bergen Community College Hackensack campus. Their aim, said Joseph Barr, a consultant with Parsons Brinckerhoff, is to bring faster, more reliable and easier to use bus service to the county.
