Local High School Marching Band Goes National!

Under the direction of Mrs. Lisa MacVicar, the Hackensack High School Comet Marching Band has enjoyed 20 years of growth, good music, supportive administration, parents, and community…all strong indicators of a thriving high school marching band program.  This year, without question, will be a pinnacle year in the history of the Marching Comet organization.

Unbeknownst to Mrs. MacVicar, the HHS Marching Comets were recommended by Mr. Michael Melfi (former Hackensack City Mayor and Council Member) and Frank Lautenberg, late democratic Senator from New Jersey to represent the State of New Jersey in the National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C. July 4th, 2014. “We are honored to accept the nomination and represent our state and community. This is such a huge opportunity for our kids. I’m sure they will remember this experience for a life time. Planning and preparing for this national event is a major undertaking and fund raising will be very important” says MacVicar.

Typically, marching bands rehearse during the month of August, start football games in early September and support their teams through late November.  Interspersed, they have a fairly rigorous schedule of competitions and parades.  “This appointment officially extends our season from five months to 11 months and will take some heavy duty fundraising” says Mr. Mike MacVicar, Assistant Band Director and Hackensack Middle School Band Director.  The parade in Washington D.C. will no doubt keep the staff and students involved and very busy fund raising and preparing for this prestigious event.

Mrs. MacVicar states “Each student will individually have to raise over $600.00 to participate in the 4 day, 3 night trip, so community and corporate support of all of our fundraisers are needed and welcomed. I would really hate to see a child miss this opportunity because we couldn’t come up with enough funds to cover the cost of the trip. We are in the planning phase of organizing fund raisers right now, but if you happen to see us holding a bake sale, car wash or whatever else we can think of, please don’t hesitate to help.”

If you would like to see the Marching Comets in action, the HHS Football Schedule is posted at www.hackensackschools.org . They will also be attending competitions in Midland Park, (Oct. 13th), Fair Lawn (Oct. 27th), and Bloomfield (Nov. 3rd)
