HACKENSACK — The City Council asked the city manager to step down Monday afternoon, four months after reappointing him and granting him a one-year contract in a move that sparked criticism because of his ties to the embattled former administration.

The Mayor & Council was divided from the beginning on his reappointment, but they deferred to LaBrosse who is the one that really wanted to keep LoIacono. Now at seems the council members are asserting themselves.  LoIacono was professional and personable, and experienced. His downfall, it would appear, is that he is a holdover from the prior administration.

It is fairly obvious  that when the dust clears who the next full time manager will be. Will the Council  take steps to insure that he is / will be a full time resident of the a City?

That would be nice.  LoIacono lived in Lodi.  Lacava lived in Wayne.  Bob Casey lived in Roxbury. We haven't had a city manager slumming it in Hackensack in a long time.  What's the worst thing that could happen, a citizen wanting something could knock on your door once a year ?

You forgot about Peter Capone. Was the performance any better because of his Hackensack residence?

Yes, I forgot about Peter.  I have never had complaints about the performance of any city manager.  Perhaps I am not privy to all the details on how they run the city.

HACKENSACK — The ousting of the city manager on Monday was not a sudden decision by the council but resulted from months of frustration with his handling of city business, the city's spokesman said Tuesday.

Update: Lawsuit roils Hackensack politics as manager claims retaliation by officials

THE RECORD

A political coalition that swept into power promising to clean up Hackensack City Hall and put an end to costly legal disputes continued to unravel Monday as the city’s acting manager — who was hired by that coalition — filed a lawsuit accusing top officials of violating state law, condoning “mob-like and thuggish behavior” by the police union and conducting a smear campaign “to destroy his reputation.”

Anthony Rottino, who became acting manager late last year, alleges that some city officials are trying to fire him, in part, because he opposed raising police salaries and sought to protect the job of a public relations consultant who is being paid $78,000 by the city while working two other public jobs.

Whistle-blower suits, like the one filed in Hackensack, carry risk

THE RECORD

Whistle-blower actions like the lawsuit filed this week by Anthony Rottino, Hackensack’s city manager, are tough to win. They must be based on a certain set of circumstances and are usually vigorously defended by employers, who face significant costs if they lose.

But lawyers who bring cases under the Conscientious Employees Protection Act say the cases serve an important purpose. They reflect an attempt by the Legislature, as a matter of public policy, to encourage workers to come forward to report illegal acts, such as an employer dumping toxic waste in a lake. They offer the  worker protection against retaliation.

It's the allegations about the police that most disturb me.  Is Hackensack EVER going to have an administration that is not in some way controlled by a policeman or a collection of policemen ?  Or by some other major city employee.

Other cities and towns don't have this problem.  Why Hackensack ?  I know Hackensack really well, and I still don't understand this part.  It's as if the biggest issue in the city is who is employed by the city, who was denied employment, and who wants employment.
