Bobservations - a best (?) of 2013 photo album
« on: January 02, 2014, 02:30:15 PM »

Here's something to look at while you're snowed-in tomorrow.

Click on "Album Details" in the upper left for the story. Above the story, click on the icon that looks like a red TV to launch the slideshow.

Hope you like it (and hopefully not on a small-screen device). ;-)

For what it's worth Ol' Homer casts his vote for the two George Washington Bridge shots.
Interestingly enough, the original plans for the bridge called for the two towers to be clad in steel which would have hidden all the intricate lattice work you show in these two photos. Fortunately it became a money issue and the the interiors of these two structures remain exposed.

Excellent compilation.  My choice for #1:  snow-covered Hackensack skyline with red sunset background.  #2: Of course, the girl in the canoe with the green thong

The GWB - which was to be clad in granite -  is absolutely one of my favorite subjects.................and there are 3 shots of it in the album.

Enjoyed all of these from warm and sunny California.

You have a keen eye for what I might call "odd pairing" that I really enjoy, things like:

egg nesting in a piling
old building reflected in modern car door handle
elderly immigrant on cell phone (elderly because his hair is grayer than mine)
plane "tangled in bridge cables"
surgery center venting
student driver in adverse weather
scoring a cross at a "garage sale"?
ferris wheel and cross
apartment building behind tree

Every picture tells a story. We make them up in our minds even though they may very well be contrary to what actually is occurring.

Really enjoy your work and the input from all those on this board. Have been away from Hackensack for 26 years now, but this is a site that keeps me grounded in my roots.

Hoping a happy and prosperous 2014 to the HackensackNow team.

Thanks Top.  Sunny California sounds nice right about now.  We are going sub-zero tonight.

Bob- I really enjoyed these, as always.

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the kind words, TOTH (and Al).

Yeah, I DO like candid "odd pairings" (fortunate juxtapositioning).

Two of the examples you brought up referred to crosses. Here's what happened in those shots:

For many years, the First Presbyterian Church at Passaic and Union has had a Korean congregation that comes in early Sunday afternoons after the original congregation. They kept a lot of things stored in the church.

They found a new home in Englewood and moved out on Christmas Eve. When I saw the guy carrying the cross to the truck, I knew that was the definitive shot to get.

Holy Trinity Church has their annual carnival in the church parking lot. That line in Freddy Cannon's "Palisade Park" about "...when you stop at the top of the ferris wheel" was probably running through my head and - from a certain angle - that stop at the top appears to be near the cross atop the church's dome/steeple.

Perhaps the woman in the picture had "Nearer My God To Thee" running through her head at that moment.

I know it's fun for the viewer to make up stories about what's happening in the pictures, but if anyone wants to know what's really going on in any picture, I'm happy to spill it.
