HACKENSACK – Non-union employees for the city who were hired after Jan. 1, 1987, will have their payouts for unused sick days capped at $15,000 upon retirement under new city rules.

City Council members said the cap, approved at a council meeting Tuesday, is part of an effort to control costly payouts for retiring employees. Mayor John Labrosse said it had been a burden for taxpayers "to have to pay hefty five and six figures to pay for unused sick time that was accumulated over 20 years."

So now it looks like the non union employees are getting screwed. No question here that the unused sick and vacation day payments are onerous to taxpayers; but, shouldn't there be an equitable  renumeration to City employees  who accepted employment with the City with the understanding that the benefits that were in place at the time of the employee's hiring would be in place at the time of retirement.
A promise made at the time of an employee's hiring should be a promise kept. End of discussion.
