ENGLEWOOD - A local non-profit plans to create a regional arts council to help local arts organizations connect with each other and for promotion.

ArtsBergen, under the umbrella of the Englewood-based Northern New Jersey Community Foundation, hopes to become a centralizing body that connects arts groups and artists together.

"We basically want to support the creative sector in this area and to engage the community and the arts to encourage creative placemaking," said Danielle De Laurentis, associate director of the foundation.

The non-profit held approximately five meetings to create an executive committee and a preliminary business plan for funding and ways to move ArtsBergen forward, said De Laurentis. Three taskforces focusing on marketing, networking and fundraising were also established during the meetings. A networking event is being planned for fall.

The arts council will mainly focus on connecting artists in municipalities surrounding Englewood, Hackensack and Teaneck, said De Laurentis. The group hopes to branch out to other areas in Bergen County as the organization grows.

There was an article about this in Thursday's Record but I can't find it online.  All I can find is the article summary from Highbeam. If anyone has it, please post it.  Thanks.

CITY LOOKS AT ARTS AS WAY TO AID ECONOMY

HACKENSACK - A group of business leaders dedicated to downtown redevelopment appears ready to spend $20,000 or more to kick-start the creation of a local arts team, with the goal of making the city a destination for cultural programs in northern New Jersey. During the monthly meeting of the Upper Main Alliance on Tuesday night, Leo Vazquez, executive director of the National Consortium of Creative Placemaking, pitched his plan to bring together arts- minded leaders in Hackensack. …

If that article is online, it's really well-hidden. I couldn't even find it in the e-edition.

Fortunately, I still have the paper (and a scanner).

Profiles in New Jersey Theater: Greg Liosi of the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center
by Jon Ciccarelli, OnStage New Jersey Theatre Columnist

Putting together a production on stage is a collaboration of many individuals with many talents and anyone who tells you otherwise are either being untruthful or selectively minded. The starring actors usual get all of the audience accolades as they are the main focus however, they would be nothing without their supporting players, director, stage manager, music director, stage crew, set crew, publicity people, and other personnel who contribute not only to a success of a show but its very existence. Very often in Community Theater and in Equity Theater many of the aforementioned show duties are filled by the same people.

(Greg Liosi – Artistic Director of the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center and the Hackensack Performing Arts Center)

Its these multitaskers who are usually the first to open up the rehearsal space and close and clean it up long after the actors and crew have left the building. They are the ones who think about what props are needed, know what PR has to go out, manage the show budget, procure costumes, and oversee a myriad of other minor details that if aren’t dealt with will significantly impact a show. They worry about every detail and deal with each problem usually when no one else will do it or will even care to do it. They go by such names as “producer”, “artistic director” and “company manager”. These dedicated people can be behind the scenes or quite visible but often go unsung for all their necessary efforts.

The Company is a professional theater group that performs regularly at the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center.

Their classes being on November 17, 2014.  This is a great opportunity for anyone who has considered acting.

More information: http://www.njacademy.org/classes

Our comprehensive actor's training program will address the individual needs of each actor, through practical experience and hands-on, one on one education.

At the academy, both beginning and experienced actors will find something that challenges them and helps them grow.  Headed by The Company’s Artistic Director, Lou Scarpati, academy classes will help actors nurture their talents and develop their confidence.

Also, as we are aligned with The Company theatre and production arms, the academy provides those who complete the program an inside opportunity to audition for upcoming productions and become members of The Company.

The Record

HACKENSACK — An arts consultant hired by an alliance of downtown business and property owners is set to build a team that would survey, build and grow a highly local city arts scene.

The Upper Main Alliance voted in its October meeting to spend $20,500 to hire Leo Vazquez, a creative place-making consultant, to advise a team of local arts-conscious residents and work with them through a nine-month program to install an ongoing focus on the arts in Hackensack.

The alliance budget is funded through an assessment on alliance property owners, not residential homeowners.
