On the Hackensack River Walkway by Costco
« on: September 19, 2014, 11:42:27 PM »
I go there once in a while - more for the photo variety than the walk, which is fairly short.

(Pic 1) The Hess tanks in Bogota - which will be gone soon - look nice reflected on the river. An air-polluting Interstate Waste Services truck (Pic 2) traveling on Costco's north side does not look nice.

There's a small variety of birds, including one that appears to be sprouting something from its posterior (Pic 3).

Pic 4 appears to show that rust is contagious.

There's a small pier on the other side of a fence that has an opening you could drive a truck through. A quick shot from there yields an image (Pic 5) that seems to show that HUMC is between the Bergen County Courthouse and the Church on the Green.

Once or twice before, I've see a feral orange tabby near the walkway around where Costco ends and the DPW begins. The cat is not interested in conversation or posing, so I never got a good shot of it.

Yesterday, I saw something bright and orange on the ground in the brush between the walkway and the river. Apparently, I disturbed the cat's sunning session. It sat up, gave me the evil eye as I took the picture, and then bolted.

I really like the composition of the Hess tanks and the early-fall vegetation.  I feel like I've seen that tabby before.

Hess Oil tanks are coming down ! Good riddance to that industrial eye-sore.  What's going to be built there.

It's official. Instead of 8 acres (the old Sifford Pontiac site) along the river for residential redevelopment, it's now 13, after a deal was struck by the developer to buy the Hess tank farm.

Back on the Hackensack River Walkway by Costco

Yesterday was a great day to get out for a photo-walk, starting with the Hackensack River Walkway behind Costco.

Some of the sights:

1, 2. I had to shoot this gull twice.

3. Where's the DPW when you need them? Oh wait...........they're right next door.

4. I thought it was a pack of hot dogs at first, but they were candles. A few feet away were two unopened candle packages of orange and blue.

5. I don't know why I took this, but it turned out to be my favorite.

6. Remember the windsock from the previous post (and the previous year)? It's now windsocked.

7. Fast exit.

8. Uh-oh.............don't show this to Al.

9. They were all sitting in the tree, but took off just before I hit the shutter.

10. Costco: dead and (almost) buried

I haven't been there in a while and there are always interesting things to shoot there, so here's what I saw last Sunday:

1,2,3. The pried-open fence to this mini-pier is stlll there (as are a shirtload of empty beer cans), so I was happy to get these shots - especially the first one which I hadn't seen before.

4. What's the ONE type of music allowed at the DPW?

5,6. I haven't ever seen this before...........things must be getting a little rowdy with all the drinking that goes on here. I would guess that the DPW must keep some sort of close eye on what goes on behind their facility, but I'm perhaps not guessing correctly.

7. Related to 5 and 6: I ran a similar photo before. but I'm amazed that the situation never seems to improve all along this walkway.

8. Swimming out to the Route 80 overpass, on which...........

9. .............a pink hippo appears to be neck-and-neck with a bus.

10,11,12. Walking back, I encountered these guys on a truck, a railing and the ground.

13. Late-afternoon sunlight and some fall colors made it worth doing another photostitch on this Hackensack/Bogota scene.............no glitches!

14,15. The whole time I was there, the wind conditions made the planes approach Teterboro almost directly overhead and LOW.

16. Maybe THAT'S why there's a windsock just beyond the southern fence! (I know - it's another repeat, but I'm fascinated that this thing is here.)

17,18. CHEATING ALERT!  I didn't take these on the Walkway. Because the planes were so low, I thought it might be worthwhile to hop over to Teterboro to shoot VERY low planes that were landing and were side-lit by a setting sun, but I got there a little too late.

CLICKit!

I took these last week along the river walkway on the north and east sides of Costco:

1. Anyone for water tennis?

2-4.  These were taken right next to the fence opening that leads to the small pier where I shot the Hess tanks and do photostitches. I appreciate the gesture, but they're not my size or style (though I DO like the composition of the sneaker tree shot).

5,6, On the eastern side, a choice of comfort levels is offered: bare-bones double or comfy single.

7. Interesting municipal vehicle - look for it in our next parade.

8. I've posted this broken marker before, but since then, it's grown a flag with a fat red stripe on top.

9-11. From the above-mentioned small pier: a residential project in a perennial Bogota flood zone. Keep an eye on that one!
