THE RECORD

HACKENSACK — A heat gun melting away thick layers of paint outside Mount Holiness Temple on Sunday afternoon ignited the old wood underneath, a pastor at the temple and a fire official said.

Inside the building 40 congregants watching new members get baptized during Sunday service noticed smoke and streamed out.

“The wood was so old because that building is at least 100 years old,” said Jarvis Williamson Sr., senior pastor at the church, explaining the building had been undergoing restoration.

No one was injured, said Hackensack Fire Capt. Robert McClintock.

Not sure how old the church is, but this 1913 map shows a vacant lot where the church now stands.  I would guess that it was built within 10 years afterwards.
