In Hackensack, Bergen County’s Oldest Church Getting By On A Prayer By Paul Nichols

In the shadow of the construction of the $147 million Bergen County Justice Center stands an all but forgotten monument that has served its City, County and Country for over 325 years. Today, Hackensack’s First Dutch Reformed Church, also known as the Church on the Green, continues to serve the community as it has done since its founding in 1686. The church is the oldest church in Bergen County.
Silently amid the pounding of columns for the foundation of the Justice Center the Church on the Green has watched over Hackensack and Bergen County since before the American Revolution.
During the retreat across New Jersey General George Washington led the Continental army down Hackensack’s Main Street where they camped on the Green in November 1776. The Green which is now home to Hackensack’s summer concerts, Christmas Tree lighting and Veteran’s Day ceremonies, was originally church land and is one of the oldest public squares in New Jersey.
