Red-tailed hawk photos
« on: February 01, 2015, 02:50:30 PM »
This guy's been hanging around lately, so there'll probably be other photo opportunities. If they happen, I'll add them to this thread.

These were taken yesterday when it was in a tree outside my living room window and one floor down.

I like the blueberry eyeball one.

I saw him on my BR A/C yesterday from the hall outside the BR. He's so skittish that I couldn't get closer, so I got the first two shots across the room through a dirty window from a hallway.

In the third shot, I barely stuck my camera out of my LR window. He didn't notice or he would have booked. He looks afraid to hang out on the edge of the A/C like his predecessor did.

I stuck my camera out again, but this time he noticed and took off. I took one blind shot and happened to catch him in flight over the Second Reformed Church.

I think this is the first time I was able to get an in-flight shot of the red tail from above.

Hawk-eyed

How's this for being hawk-eyed? I saw this redtail sitting a couple of blocks away at Main and Passaic streets in the morning and again - assuming it's the same one - in the evening atop my apartment's roof (right over my bedroom!).

The reason I got this shot was because I heard a repeated unusual bird sound while I was inside (hawk-eared?), so I went out on the roof to investigate. It was coming from above me, so I had to climb up a rusty metal ladder that's attached to the wall.

Before I could get on THAT roof, I saw a redtail sitting there and a mockingbird that was divebombing it over and over (and making the sound I heard).

Meanwhile, I'm holding onto the ladder with one hand and trying to get my camera out of my pocket with the other. It's hard to adjust your settings and get a steady shot with one hand while holding onto the ladder for dear life. If I could just get on the roof without spooking the 'tail, I'd have it made.

I did a quick check and saw that I wasn't getting good results, so I hopped onto the roof real fast and the redtail took off even faster.

The second picture - the one-handed ladder shot - is what I was left with:

Red-tailed pole-sitter

As I was walking down Ward St yesterday morning, I saw a familiar-looking shape with a large wingspan flying around the building on the SW corner of Ward and State before landing atop the telephone pole there. Yep, my favorite bird - the red-tailed hawk.

The light was pretty bad - it was just before it started snowing - but I got a few shots and combined four of them in this jpeg.
