HACKENSACK — It was a dream come true when the Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Center opened after years of delays.
And though it has been in operation since October with a full schedule of programs and activities for local seniors, center officials continue to organize fundraisers, including a Southern soul food sale on Saturday, to fund future programs, purchase a shuttle bus, and buy the building where the center is housed.
"I would love to have endowments, I would love to have grants,'' said Wanda K. Pendelton, executive director of the center on First Street. "We want to acquire the building back, and we also want to expand … and really have the center be one of the jewels of Bergen County."
The new center, located in a two-story building, which it leases from the Bergen County Housing Authority, offers seniors a place to eat lunch, socialize and participate in health and wellness programs.
