How's this for being hawk-eyed? I saw this redtail sitting a couple of blocks away at Main and Passaic streets in the morning and again - assuming it's the same one - in the evening atop my apartment's roof (right over my bedroom!).
The reason I got this shot was because I heard a repeated unusual bird sound while I was inside (hawk-eared?), so I went out on the roof to investigate. It was coming from above me, so I had to climb up a rusty metal ladder that's attached to the wall.
Before I could get on THAT roof, I saw a redtail sitting there and a mockingbird that was divebombing it over and over (and making the sound I heard).
Meanwhile, I'm holding onto the ladder with one hand and trying to get my camera out of my pocket with the other. It's hard to adjust your settings and get a steady shot with one hand while holding onto the ladder for dear life. If I could just get on the roof without spooking the 'tail, I'd have it made.
I did a quick check and saw that I wasn't getting good results, so I hopped onto the roof real fast and the redtail took off even faster.
The second picture - the one-handed ladder shot - is what I was left with:
