News to me - my parents visited the Ling in 1976
« Reply #17 on: February 12, 2017, 06:41:03 PM »
I just found this really tiny film strip (see below image). It had no info other than a date, but saw a picture of the 297, so it's the Ling and my parents toured it (as usual, my invisible mother took the pictures). I had no idea that this ever happened, but I'm sure the old Army sargeant (Pacific Theater) enjoyed it.

In the last picture, it says that if they lose the Ling for lack of donations, it will "go back to the Navy to be scrapped". Does that mean that if no one comes forward to move the sub, it will ultimately be the Navy's responsibility to do so? In a link in a previous post (http://www.northjersey.com/story/news/bergen/hackensack/2016/12/19/historic-submarine-stuck-mud/94766024/), it says the following:

Colleen ORourke, a spokeswoman for the Naval Sea Systems Command, which is responsible for Navy vessels, said the submarine remains the property of the museum. As the Lings owner, the museum would have to bear the cost of surveying the river and relocating the sub, she said.

There's no way the museum could handle that, so I guess - in a worst-case scenario - the Navy would be on the hook.

Gonna be one heck of a salvage job. According to the article, the sub is 312 feet long. Putting things in perspective, the distance from home plate along the right field foul line at Yankee Stadium is 314 feet.

The Ling has been stuck in the mud since at least 2016, so I'm wondering how flooding it made it list.

This Eye on The Record post from the end of 2016 discusses the Borgs and the Ling:

Where does it say that flooding made the Ling list?

It's actually stuck in the mud, and has been since 2016, so it's leaning, not listing.

See: BORGS WASH THEIR HANDS OF THE LING:

It's actually stuck in the mud, and has been since 2016, so it's leaning, not listing.

"List" and "lean" have similar meanings, but when a ship is involved, it's "listing", irrespective of whether it's in water, mud or ping-pong balls.

Conversely, have you ever heard of someone listing against a wall?
