HACKENSACK — A three-alarm fire on West Lookout Avenue left two families homeless and injured a firefighter Sunday night, fire officials said Monday.

A police officer passing by noticed the fire at 448 W. Lookout Ave. just before 11 p.m., evacuated the residents and alerted the fire department. The fire started in a garage attached to the home, and flames spread to the rest of the house and a home next door, said Capt. Marc Cunico.

Firefighters battled the blaze around a live wire that supplied electricity to both homes and was damaged in the fire, said Lt. Stephen Lindner, fire department spokesman. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes.

During the fire, a firefighter fell and was burned on his neck and face. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was treated and released, fire officials said.

A husband, wife, their three children and their dog at 448 W. Lookout were not allowed to return to their home, which suffered extensive damage in the fire, officials said. A husband and wife from the home next door were also left homeless.

Both families were able to find a place to stay with relatives, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but fire officials believe a motion-detecting spotlight on the outside of the home possibly shorted, sparking the blaze, Lindner said.
