Photos: window work on the First Presbyterian Church's steeple
« on: November 20, 2016, 05:15:07 PM »
I don't know when they started yesterday, but I didn't become aware of the work being done on the First Presbyterian Church's steeple until almost 12:30pm. I took some shots from my roof, but since I wasn't on the sun side, it was time to hit the street and later I finished back up on the roof.

I'm told that they were replacing the blue porthole windows with new ones that appear to be clear. I've always liked the look of light coming through those blue windows, so I've made an inquiry about what's to become of them.

Obviously, work remains to be done................unless they want to rename the church St. Tyvek's.

Really nice to see this type of work getting done.  This can't be done on the cheap.  They must have a solid congregation.

I've always liked the look of light coming through those blue windows...

I posted the first pic recently and it shows light coming through the old blue windows. The second pic was taken less than four hours ago and shows the light coming through the new clear windows.

I think I like it.

It's more than window work now - it's an overhaul.

From yesterday:

my old church.  Looks like they installed " plywood, cut roundish holes, installed tyvek, and then mounted the windows.  Nice job.

And you are right about non-compliance with OSHA reg's.  The worker is not visibly secured by any type of rope or harness.

I hope they finish it up with shakes to keep the historical authenticity

Images are from Friday and Saturday (no more St. Tyvek's).

Ever see anyone using a lawn rake on a steeple before?

It looks like a really nice job................this steeple's gonna be gorgeous.

On Saturday, December 3, one guy did all the work.

The last photo is the only one I took on December 5 because work appeared to be done only on the Passaic St side, which I can't see from home. The cherry picker never moved and I never saw anyone working.

Since I couldn't see anything on December 5, I went out for a walk early the next morning to get the ground-level view from Passaic and Union streets. In the first and fourth photos, you can see a gull sitting atop the steeple's weather vane.

Later, the workers moved around to my side of the steeple.

There were some acrobatic moves yesterday as bulky things got moved on the slanted church roof, so I made two GIFs of 11 and 13 photos that, unfortunately, put this post over the bandwidth limit, so I'll follow this post with one that contains them.

Pros: sort of interesting, saves me from posting 22 extra pictures

Cons: continuous loop..........AND THE FIRST ONE DOESN'T SEEM TO WORK! (expletive removed).   I'll try to do a remake.

Remake was the same, so I'm adding the 11 pictures to the second GIF...............just imagine them in a loop.

Below are four photos from December 8 and twelve from December 9.

It got really windy at one point yesterday (see last two photos) and it appeared that the workers had to leave the steeple (or maybe they just took a long lunch), but they were back up there later.

No sign of them today (they've been working Saturdays).............are they finished?

Stay tuned.

Photos: work FINISHED on the First Presbyterian Church's steeple
« Reply #14 on: December 14, 2016, 04:47:13 PM »
To answer my own question in the previous post, YES - it appears that they are done. I haven't seen anyone up there since last Friday, so here's a shot I took yesterday of the made-over steeple. From what I can tell, they did a pretty nice job.

Looking at that shot real close (second pic), I see something I recognize laying down behind the black casing for one of the steeple's night lights. In the next shot - which I probably took at least 10 years ago - you can see a little fence that goes around the bottom of that pillar section. The item that I recognize is one of the "pickets" of that fence. I know because I acquired one when the fence was removed (last picture).

Where the one now out there came from, I have no idea............maybe in it was inside the steeple behind that large vent-type thing that the workers occasionally went into. It just seems like a strange thing to leave out there after their thorough cleanup.

So now all that the steeple appears to need are bulb replacements for the two lights that illuminate the east side of it and it will dazzle us from all angles once again.
