Free upright piano
« on: March 10, 2018, 09:25:36 AM »
Just like Uncle Floyd played on TV (this one's nicer).

Last Monday, I saw something new on the 395 Main rubble pile - a really nice-looking upright piano (see pix) that appears to be in good shape. I spoke with the man in charge there and he said he's trying really hard to give it away so he doesn't have to demolish it next week, when they finish the cleanup. He says it's solid oak, so the scratches on top shouldn't be difficult to fix. It DOES have one broken wheel, but I don't know anything about its internal workings.

He tells me that he'll be placing it close to the State St fence today, so anyone who wants to check it out today or tomorrow (or after) can stroll on over there.

They're working today, but not tomorrow. If anyone knows a group or organization that might want this - assuming it's in decent playing shape - send me a private message through this site and I'll put you in touch with the gentleman. The piano is free, but the recipient will have to lug it home.

The piano is finally standing (on 3 legs) inside the the demolition site gate on State St between Ward and Passaic streets. I went over and took some more pictures this morning. It's a Wurlitzer and has not been cleaned up at all. It's got that lovely crushed-concrete patina. The Model number is 2880 and it's circa 1986.

The video shows the same model being played.

(what's written on YouTube):

The Last Wurl (sorta like The Band's "Last Waltz", but WAY less musical)

A Wurlitzer piano - Model 2880 - was found inside the 395 Main St (Hackensack, NJ) demolition site.

From a distance, it looked to be in fairly decent shape, so efforts were made to give it away before it would have to be trashed.

There were no takers. A close inspection showed that it really wasn't as nice as we thought. You would need mega-musclemen to turn it upside-down and shake all the debris out of it.

When I was notified that today might be its last day, I went over to the site to hit the keys to make some music..........you know, give it a Last Wurl.

This video shows that it plays as well as I do.

Adios, 88s.
