Today's error: a little sloppy, but not difficult to figure out..............except that you shouldn't have to be figuring out what a newspaper is saying.

And why, in TODAY'S (Wednesday) paper, about TODAY'S (Wednesday) Stadium gate opening, doesn't it say "Today, Yankee Stadium's gates..." instead of "On Wednesday..."? (What - next Wednesday?")
It used to be that when you opened up a newspaper and it was referring to something that was happening on the same day as the paper's date, it always said "today".

I understand that the information may have been written and immediately placed online when it was received - probably last night - and was technically correct LAST NIGHT, but not correcting these things for print AND online editions after midnight makes both editions look very stale on Wednesday.

A little sloppy AND a little lazy?

1. Continuing the "Future is Today" theme: Read the first sentence in the first image. Sounds like that game will take place sometime in the future, right? Then check the date of the paper. The game is TODAY (actually, tonight). Wouldn't it eliminate all possible confusion by writing, "The Jets host the Eagles in their preseason finale tonight at MetLife Stadium."?

2. Here's a new one: this is how part of the "Transactions" space appeared in print today (it was OK online). Did you know that the Oakland Raiders have a wide receiver named "erts"?

Two for one today in an article about the Mets' Jacob DeGrom.........

The first one is pretty obvious and the second one alters the name of a Florida team.

Lastly, it's another really stale-sounding article. Read what's within the red quotation marks - definitely upcoming-sounding, right? - and then look at the publication day/date.

The game was last night.

So after taking Labor Day off, the Sports section gremlin was back in full force today. All errors are between the red quotation marks:

1. This would make sense if it said, "Rebounding from a three-game sweep by the Indians...".

2. This has two errors, but the first one is correct in the newspaper, where the two words are hyphenated, with the second word being on the next line. But omitting the hyphen online IS a screw-up. I don't know what happened to the word "Trenton"..........it's OK online and in the paper. "Aaron Hicks' absence..." somehow added an "r" to the next word.

3. "20 homer" sounds like an attainable level in a Simpsons beer-drinking video game.

4. This also has two errors............well, OK - one and-a-half errors -  in it. "(Green)" means that Girardi actually used another word - probably the pronoun "him" - when he was speaking and the writer made sure you knew to whom Girardi was referring, but the next word ("was") kinda kills whatever sense this sentence could have made. "swing-andmisses" suffers online (but not in the paper) from the same "missing-hyphen/partially on the next line" problem I described in #2.

Today's problems involve omission and pluralization, in that order.

In today's Record: Baseball and a bikes on a bridge:

1. (Ignoring the 6 missing hyphens and the one missing comma) When Orioles' manager Buck Showalter calls for pitcher Zach Britton, he is SUMMONING his closer - not SUMMING him.

2. Of the two states that the George Washington Bridge connects, the caption for this picture mentions the wrong one. Did anyone even bother to look at the picture? (and it's a WALKWAY - not a bike path, though bikes are allowed to use it)

They have the letters correct; but, only two are in the wrong order. Seems like an improvement.

1. Fairly obvious

2. First of all, neither "passer bye" nor "passer byes" makes any sense. The word is "passerby" (singular) and "passersby" (plural) - NEVER "passerbys". It's like the plural of "mother-in-law" or "attorney-general" - "mothers-in-law", "attorneys-general".

Jets' coach Todd Bowles had already been identified in the article and had been referred to as "Bowles" two paragraphs earlier.

For some reason, someone added a "The" before "Bowles" name here.

1. The county's biggest paper can't spell "Bergen"?

2. The fourth word ("want") is incorrect, although it certainly sounds like the right word, which is actually an old-fashioned word: "wont" (not "won't"). Google "as is his wont" to verify.

It's also a word that probably gets auto-corrected a lot. In any event, "want" is incorrect.

Two problems on the same page:

1. That last semi-sentence is missing "to return" and "Braves".

2. Obvious
