Proclamation:
Office of the Mayor of the City of Hackensack
    
WHEREAS, Sister Emily Marie Walsh has left her indelible mark upon Hackensack and the parishioners of Holy Trinity Church and is one of the Citys most dedicated and giving residents for over fifty years; and

WHEREAS, Sister Emily Marie Walsh was born in Montclair, New Jersey, the oldest of nine children in the Walsh family; and

WHEREAS, after graduating high school from St. Vincent Juniorate at Convent Station, Sister Emily entered the Community of the Sisters of Charity and became a Sister of Charity in 1941.  She furthered her education by completing her undergraduate degree at the College of St. Elizabeth and attaining a Masters degree in Education at Seton Hall University; and

WHEREAS, throughout the years, Sister Emily taught in elementary schools in Jersey City and South Orange and in 1958 she was assigned to St. Andrews School in Westwood as Superior and Principal; and

WHEREAS, in 1964, Sister Emily came to Holy Trinity in Hackensack and served as the Principal for the next twenty years.  In 1984 Sister Emily was chosen to be a Pastoral Associate at Holy Trinity Parish; and

WHEREAS, in her spare time, Sister Emily has always been extremely devoted to the citizens of Hackensack, during not only their joyous occasions but also during their sorrowful occasions attending to the needs of the elderly, homebound, and the welfare of the poor; and

WHEREAS, after retiring in 2015 at the age of 94 she now lives in Convent Station and sincerely misses Hackensack where her heart will always reside; and
   
      NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor John P. Labrosse, and the other members of the City Council, do hereby wish to honor Sister Emily Marie Walsh for her outstanding dedication and service to the citizens of our community by renaming a portion of Maple Avenue to Sister Emilys Way.
