Freight on the Pascack Valley commuter line?
« on: May 01, 2019, 04:23:05 PM »
A few odd-looking train configurations have come through here every few days lately. This was the first one that I got shots of. I shot this on 4-29-19. The identical configuration passed by today (5-1-19).

Norfolk/Southern is a freight line - what's it doing on the PV tracks and what kind of "car" is that last one?

its a lumber car.   there is a Lumber Yard in Spring Valley right at the end of the line.  probably going up there.

If it's more economical to ship product by train than by truck, why not ???  There are no restrictions on railroad use, and the laws governing railroads are quite enigmatic. Basically they can do whatever they want. Local communities and even States don't have too much jurisdiction or rights to say anything.

Just got this comment from "Amtrak Enthusiast" on the YouTube video page:

"This train is Norfolk Southern local H81, running from Croxton, NJ to service Kuiken Brothers Kitchen & Bath in Emerson, NJ. The car that it is pulling is a centerbeam car that hauls lumber, which will be used to make cabinets."
