The FDU pedestrian bridge replacement
« on: June 12, 2019, 04:22:26 PM »
On June 3, I saw yet another tall crane in town, but it wasn't along Main St. I wasn't sure exactly where it was.

I went out for a walk along the Hackensack River Walkway in Johnson Park and FDU and suddenly came upon it. Oh yeah - the scheduled summer replacement of the FDU pedestrian bridge! Not being in summer mode, I had forgotten all about it.

Shooting through the fence, I could see that the side railings were gone and the bridge's walkway was kind of chewed up. Just south of the bridge, a worker sat in a small boat, but I'm not sure why.

Continuing my walk up to Route 4, there was one opening where I could get  a flip-side shot of the crane and on the way back, I shot a stitch of most of the original bridge.

From what I can see from home, the crane's still there, although in a different position. I really need to get back there soon to follow the progression.

the worker is in the boat in case anyone working on the bridge falls in the water.

1. I went back to the FDU pedestrian bridge on Friday, starting on the Teaneck side.

2. The walking surface is now gone, but the old supports appear to be staying.

3,4. The rescue craft isn't in the water, so these guys are in big danger.

5,6,7. First look at the new components of the bridge

8. When no one was looking, I "borrowed" the boat and zipped over to the Hackensack side to take this picture (and if you believe THAT................).

It's still not open, but it looks almost finished.

The first 12 images are from the morning of July 4, when I shot from both sides of the river. In one shot, I was surprised to find a gate totally unlocked.

2 each are from the evenings of July 13 and 27 from the Hackensack side.

#7 are counter weights for the crane.

Still had no idea when the pedestrian bridge would reopen, so I checked it out on the 24th (closed) and 31st (open).

8-24-19

1,2.  Still closed, shot through the fence

3. Side view

4. There was some sort of orientation for new students (I think) on the Teaneck side. After checking out 8-24-19 on the FDU site, I found this:

"Date: Saturday, August 24, 2019

All new students and their families are cordially invited to participate in the Procession and the Illumination Ceremony on the Metropolitan Campus, an FDU tradition to welcome our new students.

The Procession will begin in front of the Student Union Building, wind through campus, and across the FDU footbridge to symbolize our new students crossing into the start of their college careers."

Could be a slight problem, considering that the bridge was still closed that day.

8-31-19

5. Open!

6,7.  The eastbound walk across

8-12. Westbound

13. Had to turn around to check out the #24 Clippers jersey that just strolled past me................yep, early-90s Seton Hall star Terry Dehere, who played for the Clips in the mid-90s.

14. Another side view.

Well, it wasn't really finished, but now it is.

I wonder if anyone will pay attention to the sign in the second picture.
