Currently, the sidewalk activity is confined to the east side of Main St in NOPASS (NOrth of PASSaic St) - specifically, between Passaic and Anderson).

6-7-19

Late that Friday afternoon, I noticed something unusual: some kind on monster saw vehicle being unloaded in front of 22 Ward, backed into the E municipal parking lot and parked across two spaces. Why was THAT thing there? I remembered meeting some surveyors in that lot a month or so prior. They told me they thought that the city planned on doing a major overhaul of the lot - something it really needs.

6-8-19

The next day, I took some pictures before the lot overhaul started.

6-10-19

By Monday, the vehicle was gone and no lot overhaul was begun.

6-12-19

A whole series of metered spaces closest to State St on the southern side of the lot was commandeered by a crew who dumped piles of crushed stone and left lots of construction equipment in those spaces. All this was right across the street from the entrance to the 389 Main site, but there didn't appear to be any connection between the two.

That was confirmed whenever any trucks came into that area of the lot, picked up or dropped off something and then headed south on State St.

I was walking up Passaic St from River St when I came upon the dug-up sidewalk in front of the YMCA and other businesses on that block - a project I hadn't heard about. I showed workers a picture of the saw vehicle and asked if that had dug up the sidewalks. It had.

It all started to make sense now. There really was no other place nearby to store piles of stone and needed vehicles other than the E lot - they just had to go around the block every time they needed something.

6-14-19

I went to Main & Ward to shoot some 389 Main images and saw that the sidewalk work had gotten started as far north as Ward. Back home, I took a couple of shots of the storage area and also made a video showing a truckload of stone being dumped.

6-17-19

This is a video of a small track vehicle clattering its way slowly down State St to go around the block to the sidewalks site.

6-19-19

At the storage area, a delivery of 15 space creatures was made. I have no idea what they are, but I'll bet somebody here does.............

6-20-19

We wrap up today's post the same way we started it (what's with this "we" stuff?): with the saw vehicle - this time, heading home. Had I known it was working that day, I would have headed right over to Main St. I'd like to see what this thing looks like in action.

More to follow.........

As usual, most of this "sidewalk" imagery is of the storage area - a block away from the actual sidewalk work on Main St (though there IS some of that mixed in).

The videos from four different days:

How to park your Bobcat in a small space (move the cones!)

Hackensack, NJ, Municipal "E" lot, 7-24-19

Hosing your cement mixer (Hackensack, NJ, 8-1-19)

Loading the Cat on the flatbed (Hackensack, NJ, 8-8-19)

Load of broken sidewalks (Hackensack, NJ, 8-10-19)

STILLS:

7-24-19

1. This is the still I made for the "...park your Bobcat..." video thumbnail.

7-25-19

2,3. Making sure the Bobcat doesn't fall off the flatbed.

7-26-19

4. They put some dirt in the handicap space?

7-30-19

5. They put a LOT of dirt in the handicap space!

6. Somebody finally realizes that maybe this is not the right thing to do...........and it only took four days to figure that out.

8-1-19

7. The "Hosing your cement mixer" thumbnail still.

8-2-19

8. This stayed there until September 10.

9. East side of Main St, just south of E. Ward

8-3-19

10,11. Time to move the Bobcat to its next job.

8-6-19

12. How long before this area is used as a municipal parking lot once again?

13, 14. How to move whatever-they-ares

8-7-19

15. Working just north of E. Ward St, after........

16. ........finishing just south of E. Ward.

8-8-19

17. Giant intestines get tossed.

18. I thought a giant sofa was getting dumped/pulled off a truck.

19. The "Loading the Cat" video still

8-10-19

20. The "Load of broken sidewalks" video still

This project seems to be winding down.

9-10-19

1. You've seen the top of the first image before. The bottom half shows the end result.

2,3,4. Scrubbing up and (filling in) some of the spaces they used in the E lot.

9-15-19

5. I don't know if the two main items are there because one hit the other or not (I doubt it), but it just struck me as an interesting potential photo stitch when I saw it.

9-20-19

6. Well, just when I thought they were done clogging up the spaces, they dump more stuff and some of it's in the handicap space (their space allotment was the southern edge of the E lot from State St up to the handicap space). Back in July, you may recall that they were made to move a pile of dirt after they put it in the same place. It took 4 days for them to finally do the right thing. THIS time, however.............

9-27-19

7. .........they not only didn't move anything a WEEK later, they also added 3 pieces of excavation equipment - one of which took up the rest of the handicap space - but they also LEFT IT ALL THERE WHEN EVERY OTHER ALLOTTED SPACE WAS EMPTY! AND NOBODY DID ANYTHING ABOUT IT...............NOT THE HPD OR ANYONE ELSE! SHAMEFUL!

10-26-19

8. AND IT WASN'T UNTIL A MONTH LATER THAT THEY FINALLY CLEARED THE HANDICAP SPACE!

Good riddance to this thoughtless bunch!

Sidewalk trees
« Reply #6 on: November 20, 2019, 11:00:25 AM »
Well, I thought we were done with this crew, but a day after I made the previous post:

1. This truck showed up with about 20 baby trees (and an oil-burning Cat)..........

2,3. ........and started occupying more spaces - this time on the western edge of the E lot, right under my window.

4. The trees were taken one by one, probably to Main St.

5. The loooooooong truck that brought them here backed out of the E lot and wound up facing the wrong way on one-way Ward St. It inched forward until oncoming cars wouldn't let it get through and it wound up having to back up to Union St and somehow turn around.

6. I decided to go to where I thought the trees' final destination was and - sure enough - I saw all these scrawny-looking things poking out of new Main St sidewalks between Passaic and Ward streets. Anyone have any idea what kind of trees these are and what they might eventually look like when they're untied and grown up?

7,8. They happened to be in the process of planting a tree right across the street in front of the YMCA when I was there.

9. On my way back home, I got a sunlit shot of a bunch of the remaining trees.

10. Later, I saw that they added a pile of dirt.

11. Three days later, they added a container of dirt to more spaces - this time about 30-40 feet to the east of the trees.

12. The same day, a lazy dirt hauler ignored the one-way signs on Ward St to take a shortcut, but managed to be overshadowed, stupidity-wise, by a New York driver who not only ignored the parking-within-six-inches-from-a-curb rule, but did so in front of a DRIVEWAY.

13. Here's what the spaces looked like after they removed the last tree (but not the dirt). They're still parking vehicles there overnight.

i would love to know what brain surgeon thought it was a good idea to plant trees on Salem St, between Main and Moore...  besides for the fact that the street is too narrow for trees, it is scratching the crap out of every truck that comes in contact with them, and the trees themselves are getting a beating...  and when people drop anchor in front of the restaurant and park, you have no choice but to run into the branches...  not good planning...   Not every street needs a tree canopy on it....

I just happened to be walking on Main St by E. Salem today and  - lo and behold -  a truck on E. Salem just happened to be stopped at the light. I just happened to have my camera with me and took a picture of the tree branches that just happened to be resting against the side of the truck.

The second picture shows the tree I photographed last week when it was being planted in front of the YMCA. The camera was held at eye level.

I'm now slightly less concerned about trucks getting scratched and more worried about corneas being scratched or eyeballs being popped out.

This project - and the type of tree selected - doesn't seem to have a ton of thought behind it. Somebody's gonna get hurt.
