Real Men Dance
Community Arts Project
[/b]

The Center for Modern Dance Education, founded in 1962 as a non-profit community arts organization, is located at 84 Euclid Avenue in Hackensack.

There is something special for men and boys at CMDE this summer, REAL MEN DANCE. If you’re a guy who likes to dance, but uncomfortable with the average dance class, this workshop is for you. REAL MEN DANCE is a community dance project that starts with a free summer dance workshop series for men only. No tights, slippers or experience required, just socks, sweats and courage instead. The first workshop is for boys and teens ages 10-17 years old on July 6th, 2005 6:30-8pm, the second for adult men ages 18 and up on July 13th, 2005 7-8:30pm and the third is for all men and boys ages 10 to Adult on July 27th, 2005. Fathers bring your sons to that last workshop. Space is limited so call today to reserve your space.

Over a course of 10-12 weeks during the Summer and Fall of 2005, the REAL MEN DANCE project will attempt to draw attention to the presence of men in dance and explore the racial, ethnic and sexual stereotypes that affect both professional dancers and those men and boys who choose to dance recreationally.  Lead by early-career dance artist and CMDE faculty member, Roger Turner, this project will give men of varied ages and backgrounds an opportunity to work together on a dance piece for, by, and about men, in a world where most dancers, and dance students are female. More importantly, we at CMDE hope to give boys and male teenagers who are interested in dance a chance to create and perform with professional male dancers, to reinforce that the word 'dance' is not synonymous with the word 'woman'. This project is funded by a grant from the Puffin Foundation, Ltd.
