Free Professional Development Workshop “Hidden Disabilities“ Led by Blumenthal & Hayer

Hackensack- Through a grant from The Dana Foundation, the non-profit Center for Modern Dance Education (CMDE), presents “Hidden Disabilities led by Karen Blumenthal and Carolyn Hayer, the fifth in a series of free professional development workshops, on Monday, January 16, 10 am-3pm at 84 Euclid Ave. Hackensack, NJ.  It is geared to people who teach dance and related arts in public schools and is open to any interested individual.

Karen Blumenthal, Hackensack resident, has a Masters of Science in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Development from Hunter College and she volunteers on the Special Education Department Parent Advisory Council of the Hackensack Board of Education.

Carolyn Hayer, who also lives in Hackensack, is the Coordinator of the Family Partners Educational Advocacy Program for the Arc of Bergen and Passaic Counties. She is also a Technical Assistance Specialist for SPAN, the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network.

This workshop will present information on working with children with non physical disabilities  such as attention deficit, sensory integration issues, learning disabilities, neurological impairment and autistic spectrum disorders . Constructive and sensitive ways to communicate with parents and family members will be discussed as well as offering useful teaching tools in working with students with hidden disabilities in the classroom.

CMDE is a non-profit arts organization, founded in 1962 whose mission is to promote modern dance in partnership with community and make it available to everyone, including those with disabilities. CMDE is a registered New Jersey Department of Educational Professional Development (#4410). A letter of participation or Continuing Education credit is available upon request for individuals who complete the workshop. CMDE is located in a wheelchair-accessible facility.
