New Jersey Shipwrecks
Margaret Thomas Buchholz
Gripping coastal history is brought to life by Margaret Thomas Buchholz. For most of the last four centuries, travelers and cargo to North American cities went by ship and the greatest concentration of shipping traffic was found along the New Jersey Shore, a wild frontier of largely uninhabited sandbars and shifting shoals.  From the days of sail to steam and oil, ships (and even submarines) have been drawn to our coast. And, for thousands of vessels, it became their final resting-place — with unfortunate ships beaten to driftwood by the breakers, with passengers and crew drowning or dying of hypothermia (as most wrecks occurred during the coastal storms of winter). Margaret (author of New Jersey Shipwrecks: 350 Years in the Graveyard of the Atlantic) will entertain and educate about the dangers of seafaring and the limits of human endurance.

Discoveries in the past 30 years -

Greg Huber will speak on the Dutch-American Barns of Bergen County, NJ and Rockland County, NY, as well as some in upstate NY and central NJ. Greg has documented close to 40 Dutch-related barns in Rockland and Bergen County and worked with the late Claire Tholl in researching the barns of Bergen County. He has given many barn and house architecture lectures and conducted numerous barn tours. In 1990 he gave a tour of Dutch barns in Bergen and Somerset Counties. Greg’s first talk on Dutch American barns was given at the Wortendyke Barn in Park Ridge in September 1977.

James Parker
Gordon Bond

Apprenticed to New York printer, William Bradford and mentored by Benjamin Franklin, James Parker’s skills would surpass those of his master and his mentor. He would go on to become New York’s premiere printer and a player in several freedom of the press battles. James Parker presents the historian with interesting paradoxes. He was a loyal civil servant and Anglican. Yet he also printed materials for anti-Anglican interests and the Sons of Liberty. Indeed, he would get in trouble for doing so. He believed strongly in the liberty of the press and like many printers of his day, struggled to find a balance between his idealism and the pragmatic realities of making a living. Gordon Bond will enlighten us with his expansive view of James Parker’s life and career.

The Detonators
Chad Millman
An explosion reverberated through lower Manhattan, the culmination of a destructive plot orchestrated by foreign terrorists. The U.S. government had missed the clues indicating this assault was possible, and as a result, America found herself involved in a protracted war overseas. No, this wasn’t September 11, it was July 30, 1916. Black Tom Island, a spit of land in New York Harbor, was essentially destroyed when German saboteurs blew it up on that fateful day.The blast was so powerful that the ground shook in Maryland, and windows from Jersey City to midtown Manhattan to Brooklyn were blown out. The attack was one of the major reasons the U.S. became involved in World War I and yet, few people have heard of the incident. Chad Millman, author of THE DETONATORS: The Secret Plot to Destroy America and an Epic Hunt for Justice, will describe the whole fascinating story. He  is currently a senior editor at ESPN The Magazine.
