Quote
The $350,000 no-bid contract was awarded to the Maywood firm DMR Architects, which also was hired last year to conduct an $89,000 preliminary study of the proposals. DMR and its officers have been generous contributors to Bergen County Democrats, giving $27,050 since the 2002 campaigns in which Democrats took control of county government. Charles H. Sarlo, the brother of state Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge, also is an officer in the firm.

What's with "no-bid contracts"?  How do we know that $350,000 is a fair price of tax payer money?

Is there any concern of a conflict of interest with the state senator's brother?

Update (7/13/05):  The Freeholders passed the bond ordinance to purchase the Goldberg site.  The Freeholders also passed Freeholder Padilla's resolution to get the Fletcher Creamer property appraised.

While the Freeholders indicated that it was probably too late to move the site of Kansas Street Shelter, Freeholder Padilla still holds out some hope.

At the least, it appears that if the Creamer property becomes available, serious thought will be given to consolidating other County properties to that location, like the Probation office currently on River Street.

More to come.

Latest story: County boondoggle

The article says: "Before the county spends that much money on a questionable project, the public should have a say."

Didn't the public have a say?:  Bergen weighing ideas for better police garage
What am I missing?

For anyone who may be curious: "Boondoggle" was a derisive term used by opponents of New Deal federal works projects administered by the FERA, CWA, and WPA. They objected to "make work" projects that seemed to have no other purpose than to put people on the government payroll.

Since when has The Record ever been consistent in its treatment of issues?  It's the quintessential muckraking paper, dedicated to covering controversy and, absent it, creating controversy in order to cover it.

It would appear in the mind of The Record's editorial staff, public officials are only there to make small decisions, and we should eschew principles of representative democracy in the bigger ones.  The public's decision to elect Freeholders with certain visions doesn't count as a public say, nor does the very open and public discussions over the redevelopment.  I also couldn't help but note they compared the $50 million figure with the $14 million figure of which the feasibility was questioned in the previous article, which to me indicates a certain agenda and fear of a full accounting of the question at hand.

Latest story:  GOP aims for freeholder inroads

County police

The future of the county police would take decidedly different turns under the two parties.

Ganz and McPherson support the continuation of the 82-member force and the construction of a new headquarters.

Kaplan and Kirk propose merging the county police into the Sheriff's Department to save money. Two years ago, 80 percent of the force made more than $100,000, excluding overtime but including longevity perks and stipends.

Ganz, McPherson and the rest of the Democratic freeholders took a major step toward ensuring the future of the force by approving an $8.1 million bond issue in July to purchase and raze the former S. Goldberg & Co. slipper factory in Hackensack, clearing the way for a new county police headquarters at the site.

Police brass have long complained that their base on Zabriskie Street is cramped.

The proposed three-story complex would cost $37 million to $47 million and also would house the county's Central Municipal Court and a public works garage.

Calls to put the project up for public approval in a referendum were shot down by freeholders in August.

News on this project has been so lacking that I thought it was dead.  Back in the hey-day of the debate over this project in 2005, some people openly speculated that by the time the new condos were built on the Zabriskie Street property, the real estate market would have turned sour and it wouldn't be the right time to build condos.

Now the reverse is true. By the time the new Police Station is made across from the Jail, and the Zabriskie STreet lot is leveled and cleared, AND a new development is approved, financed, and built, the real estate market will have turned around again. Five years from now we'll be in a totally different real estate market.  Therefore, the Transit Village condo plan should proceed despite the sour real estate market.
