JOHN A. SOLARI,   of Township of Washington, died on Monday, January 12, 2009, at his home, at the age of 89 years. Born in the Bronx, New York, he resided in Hackensack and has lived Township of Washington since1965. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army and attended officers training school, graduating at the top of his class as a second lieutenant and was sent to France to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. After fighting in Holland and Germany, he became a decorated officer, receiving the bronze star for his heroics and captain status, and after his executive officer became a casualty of war, he continued to carry out his duties while under determined enemy fire. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946.  During the Korean War he was recalled to assist with the training of officers for field artillery. In 1950, he joined his father in the family restaurant business and throughout the years he thought of his restaurant as both a vocation and a hobby which he loved. His son Marco joined him in 1986 at Solari's Restaurant. He was a member of the Bergen County 200 Club of Hackensack where he served as Trustee and honored him as "Man of the Year in 2007. He also was a member of the Hackensack Chamber of Commerce which honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He was an avid bowler, reader, had a love for classic cars, and enjoyed camping and vacationing with his family. Beloved husband of Judith C. (nee Scacchetti) Solari. Devoted father of Shelley Solari of Township of Washington, Renea Savona and her husband Anthony of Clifton Park, New York, and Marco Solari and his wife Heather of Warwick, New York. Loving grandfather of Nicholas, Marco, Jonathan, Johnny, and Luke. Dearest brother of the late Rose Mancini, Clara Krycher, and Marion DiNapoli.The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 16th, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 66 Ridgewood Road, Township of Washington, at 11:00 AM with burial following at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Hackensack. Visiting will be on Wednesday from 7 - 9 PM and Thursday 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in honor of his grandson Nicholas Savona, to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, New York Chapter, 6 Greenwood Drive, East Greenbush, New York 12061 would be appreciated.

John was a true gentleman. Whether you stopped in once a day, once a week or once a month, he knew your name and treated you as a guest and not just a customer. Marco has learned well from his father.
